Ogun Polytechnic Under Siege As Police Engage Armed Robbers in Shootout, Leaving One Suspect Dead

Armed Robbery Drama Unfolds at Ogun Poly Hostel:

A tense and deadly confrontation occurred in the early hours of Thursday, January 25, 2024, as armed robbers targeted Abbey Hostel in Ode Remo, Ogun, where students from the Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade reside.

The incident resulted in a fierce gun battle between the invaders and the state police command.

Four Suspects Storm Ogun Poly Hostel:

Reports indicate that around 1:30 am, four suspected robbers forcefully entered the area, initiating a raid on the student hostel.

During the operation, students were reportedly robbed of their mobile phones and other electronic devices.

Alert to Police: Residents Seek Help Amid Robbery:

As the robbery unfolded, one of the residents managed to alert the police about the ongoing criminal activity in the area, seeking intervention to rescue the students from the assailants.

Police Confrontation and Suspect Fatality:

Upon receiving the distress call, an anti-crime patrol team swiftly approached the hostel. In response, the suspected robbers, aware of the police presence, engaged in a shootout with the law enforcement officers.

The exchange resulted in the death of one robber, while the others managed to escape with injuries.

Police Spokesperson Confirms Incident:

Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating, “One of the four suspects was neutralized in the gun duel.

The three fled the robbery scene with bullet wounds.” The police recovered stolen items, including five iPhones, one Techno phone, a wristwatch, an iPod, and a power bank.

Recurring Security Challenges at Ogun Poly Hostel:

The Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade and its associated student hostels in Sapaade have witnessed a series of security challenges in recent times.

In December 2023, a student named Segun lost his life in a robbery incident, emphasizing the persistent threat faced by students in the area.

Past Incidents Heighten Concerns:

Previous incidents in November 2023 included sporadic shootings and reported cases of robbery in students’ hostels.

These incidents resulted in the theft of personal belongings, cases of sexual assault against female students, and gunshot wounds sustained by some residents.

Ongoing Efforts to Apprehend Fleeing Suspects:

Efforts are currently underway by the police to apprehend the remaining suspects who fled the scene with injuries.

The incident underscores the critical need for heightened security measures to safeguard students and residents in the region.
