A nurse at the Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester was left fighting for her life following a brutal attack by a patient who became upset about having to wait for medical attention.
The incident, which unfolded in the hospital’s accident and emergency department late on Saturday night, left the nurse, a woman in her 50s, with serious injuries that could potentially change her life forever.
Attack Details
The assault occurred around 11:30 p.m. when the patient, reportedly frustrated with the wait, escalated into violence.
Authorities confirmed that the attacker used a sharp object, though it was not a knife. Local police swiftly arrested a 37-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.
Witnesses suggest that the altercation began with a heated argument about wait times.
A fellow nurse explained, “It’s terrible. The patient became angry because they had to wait to be seen. It’s scary.”
Another nurse mentioned, “It was just a disagreement that got out of hand. It wasn’t a case of the patient going berserk, but it’s still shocking that it led to an attack.”
Community Reaction
The attack has left both hospital staff and the local community shaken.
Labour MP Jim McMahon expressed his shock, offering thoughts and well wishes for the injured nurse and her loved ones.
Local resident Mike Lawton, who lives near the hospital, shared his disbelief, noting the long hours nurses work and the shock of such violence.
“I hope she’s OK,” he said.
Hospital’s Response
The Royal Oldham Hospital released a statement expressing its deep sadness over the incident.
The hospital assured that all services were running as usual and emphasized its dedication to supporting the nurse and her family during this difficult time.
Heather Caudle, Chief Nursing Officer at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees the hospital, shared her dismay, saying, “We are incredibly shocked and saddened by last night’s incident, and our focus is on supporting the colleague involved and their family.”
Ongoing Investigation
The police are continuing their investigation, with the suspect remaining in custody.
Detective Sergeant Craig Roters confirmed that the woman’s condition was critical, and that her family and colleagues were in their thoughts.
Greater Manchester Police also indicated that there would be an increased presence around the hospital during their inquiries to ensure public reassurance.
While the investigation is still in its early stages, authorities confirmed they are not currently seeking any other individuals in connection with the attack, and there is no wider threat to the public.
