Northampton woman alleges intimidation after police attempt arrest at her home following abuse accusations against West Northamptonshire Council leader

The handling of domestic abuse allegations involving former West Northamptonshire Council leader Jonathan Nunn has stirred significant debate.

Nunn, who resigned as council leader earlier this year, was previously accused of abuse by four women, including his first wife, Maria Botterill.

The controversy intensified when Botterill herself became the subject of a police investigation after Nunn reported her for harassment.

Police Arrive En Masse at Botterill’s Home

In September, police made two attempts to arrest Botterill at her Northampton home, each time with a notable presence.

Footage from her doorbell camera shows four officers outside on the first visit, with a nursery staff member reporting four more officers waiting in a car nearby.

Three weeks later, two additional officers arrived to arrest her, but Botterill was again not at home.

The heavy police response, with up to eight officers present, left Botterill unsettled.

“It felt excessive,” she noted. Police reportedly sought her in connection to emails she sent to Nunn’s fellow council members about his history of alleged abuse, as well as her presence at public council meetings on unrelated matters.

Ultimately, Northamptonshire Police dropped the case without charges, but the incident left Botterill feeling “shocked and dumbfounded.”

A History of Abuse Allegations Against Nunn

Nunn has a documented history of domestic abuse allegations.

In 2004, he admitted to assaulting his second wife, Janice Nunn, after a public altercation.

The court sentenced him to community service, and he resigned from his political role at the time.

Despite these issues, he returned to politics and, by 2022, was leading initiatives against violence towards women.

Multiple women, including Carolyn Marks, the mother of his twins, and another former partner, Sylvia, described Nunn’s behavior as abusive and threatening.

Marks alleged that Nunn would frequently swear and belittle her, while Sylvia shared incidents of intimidation and aggressive behavior, leading her to believe he was a threat to her children.

These accounts contributed to his eventual resignation as council leader earlier this year.

Botterill Claims Continued Intimidation

Since going public, Botterill reports experiencing ongoing intimidation.

She recounted an incident in a local park where a stranger warned her to “shut up or else,” and said she has been followed by cars on multiple occasions.

The police visits to her home in September initially led her to believe they were there for her protection, especially after noticing a suspicious person loitering near her home.

Reflecting on the events, Botterill remarked, “Powerful people seem to be protected… It’s like a boys’ club.”

She expressed her frustration with Nunn remaining in public office, despite the troubling accusations against him.

Council Leader Denies Allegations; Police Close Case

In April, Nunn publicly denied Botterill’s accusations, describing them as part of a “sustained campaign” against him and affirming his harassment complaint to the police.

Northamptonshire Police confirmed that the harassment allegations were thoroughly investigated but closed the case without any arrests.

This case highlights the challenges in addressing accusations involving individuals in power and raises questions about the support and protection offered to those who come forward with allegations.
