Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for additional air defence and financial support after another wave of Russian attacks struck residential buildings, businesses and critical infrastructure across several regions of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said two people were killed in the Kyiv region, including an Azerbaijani citizen, while dozens were injured nationwide. In Kharkiv alone, he reported 28 injuries, including nine children, following a strike on a high-rise apartment building.
High-Rise Apartment Building Hit in Kharkiv
Kharkiv suffered some of the most serious damage reported during the overnight and morning attacks.
According to Zelenskyy, a strike hit a multi-storey residential building and partially destroyed its second and fourth floors.
Emergency personnel responded to the damaged building as reports of casualties increased throughout the morning.
Zelenskyy put the number of injured in Kharkiv at 28, including nine children. Casualty figures subsequently continued to change as authorities assessed the aftermath, with later local reporting giving higher totals.
Nine Children Among Kharkiv Casualties
The number of children injured added to concerns surrounding the attack on the residential area.
Initial reports gave lower casualty figures before emergency services and local officials revised their totals as more victims were identified.
Zelenskyy’s statement specifically reported nine injured children among the 28 casualties known to him at the time.
The attack formed part of a broader overnight assault affecting multiple Ukrainian regions.
Two People Killed in Kyiv Region
Zelenskyy said two people lost their lives in attacks on the Kyiv region.
One of those killed was an Azerbaijani citizen.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry subsequently confirmed that Azerbaijani national Abbas Abbasov, born in 1978, had been killed and said its embassy in Ukraine was assisting with arrangements to repatriate his remains.
Zelenskyy offered condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed.
Drone Attacks Damage Sites Across Kyiv
Ukraine’s capital also suffered damage from Russian drone attacks.
According to Zelenskyy, residential buildings, communications infrastructure and petrol stations were damaged.
He also said an ordinary café was destroyed and accused Russian forces of attempting to set fire to a food market.
Independent reporting confirmed a Russian drone struck a petrol station in Kyiv during the overnight attacks.
Palau-Flagged Vessel Struck in Odesa Region
The Odesa region was another target during the wave of attacks.
Zelenskyy said a vessel sailing under the flag of Palau was struck.
The Ukrainian president did not provide extensive details about the vessel in his initial statement, but reporting on the overnight attacks confirmed his announcement that a Palau-flagged ship had been hit in the region.
Residential buildings in Odesa were also among the locations Zelenskyy said had been damaged.
Ice Cream Factory Damaged in Zhytomyr
An unusual civilian target highlighted by the Ukrainian president was an ice cream factory in the Zhytomyr region.
Zelenskyy said the facility was damaged during the Russian attack.
Subsequent reporting identified the affected site as a plant belonging to Ukrainian ice cream producer Rud. Regional authorities said a fire broke out following a drone strike but reported no casualties at the facility.
Firefighters eventually extinguished the blaze after temporarily withdrawing because of the threat of additional attacks.
Residential Areas Hit Across Multiple Regions
Damage was not limited to Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa and Zhytomyr.
Zelenskyy said residential buildings were also hit in the Sumy and Rivne regions.
The Ukrainian president described the assault as a nationwide wave continuing throughout the night and into the morning.
Emergency services were deployed to affected locations to extinguish fires, assist casualties and assess damage.
Critical Infrastructure Targeted in Four Regions
Zelenskyy also reported attacks against critical infrastructure.
He identified the Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia regions as areas where important infrastructure had been targeted.
Russia‘s Defence Ministry separately said its forces had attacked Ukrainian logistics and communications facilities, port infrastructure and other sites it claimed supported Ukraine’s military.
Moscow said its targets included fuel infrastructure, port facilities and vessels allegedly transporting military or dual-use supplies. The claims from both sides regarding individual targets could not all be independently verified.
Zelenskyy Calls for More Air Defence
Following the attacks, Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for concrete assistance from Ukraine’s international partners.
He identified air-defence systems as one of Kyiv’s immediate priorities.
Ukraine has repeatedly sought additional capabilities to intercept Russian drones, missiles and other aerial weapons before they reach cities and infrastructure.
Zelenskyy thanked countries preparing new assistance packages while arguing that clear decisions were now necessary.
Energy and Budget Support Also Requested
Military assistance was not the Ukrainian president’s only request.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine also requires energy support and help covering gaps in the national budget.
He described those forms of assistance as measures that directly strengthen the country’s ability to withstand the continuing war.
For Kyiv, maintaining electricity and other essential services has become increasingly important as attacks continue to affect infrastructure across the country.
Zelenskyy Thanks Countries Standing With Ukraine
Zelenskyy concluded his appeal by thanking governments and individuals that continue speaking publicly about the war and preparing assistance for Ukraine.
“I thank everyone who is not staying silent about what is happening in Ukraine,” he said.
The Ukrainian president argued that air defence, energy assistance and financial support were among the most important forms of help Kyiv could receive as civilians continue facing Russian aerial attacks.
Monday’s strikes again demonstrated the geographical reach of the conflict, with reported damage stretching from Kharkiv and Kyiv to Odesa and Zhytomyr and attacks on critical infrastructure reported across several additional regions.
