A New York lawyer, John Ray, has made startling allegations that Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect Rex Heuermann engaged in cannibalism and that his family participated in his alleged crimes. Ray represents the family of Shannan Gilbert, whose remains led to the discovery of Heuermann’s alleged victims. He suggested that the architect’s relatives were involved in the killings.
Circumstantial Evidence from Artwork
Ray presented artwork he claimed was shared by Heuermann’s daughter, Victoria, on Tumblr. He used this as circumstantial evidence, suggesting that one image depicting ‘half-eaten’ remains indicated Victoria’s interest in cannibalism.
Authorities Deny Family Involvement
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has consistently stated that Heuermann’s relatives are not suspects and were out of town during the murders. Prosecutors have also not indicated that cannibalism was involved in the killings.
Claims of Torture and Horror
Ray escalated his claims by stating that the case involved more than just murder, alleging a deep interest in torturous acts. He speculated on the family’s awareness of these activities, describing the situation as “BDSM to the max” and “demonic.”
Criticism from Other Legal Representatives
Asa Ellerup’s lawyer, Bob Macedonia, dismissed Ray’s claims as reckless. Kerri Rawson, daughter of BTK serial killer Dennis Rader and a victims’ advocate, also criticized Ray, calling him not credible and expressing disgust at his allegations.
Recent Indictments and DNA Evidence
The press conference followed Heuermann’s indictment for the murders of Jessica Taylor in 2003 and Sandra Costilla in 1993. Heuermann, now accused of killing six women over 30 years, was linked to the new victims through DNA evidence, specifically male hair found on their remains.
Arrest and Initial Charges
Heuermann was arrested in July and initially charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. In February, he was also charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Discovery of Victims’ Remains
The remains of the Gilgo Beach victims were discovered during the search for Shannan Gilbert, who disappeared in May 2010 after a frantic 911 call. Her body, found in December 2011, led police to discover the ‘Gilgo Four.’
Unresolved Questions About Shannan Gilbert
Shannan Gilbert’s death remains unsolved, with police suggesting it may have been accidental. However, her family believes she was murdered, and her case remains a focal point in the ongoing investigation.
Awaiting Trial
Rex Heuermann, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, remains in jail awaiting trial. A trial date has not yet been set. The investigation continues as authorities seek to uncover the full extent of his alleged crimes.
