New Pathway Facilitates Reunion of Afghan Families Separated by Kabul Evacuation in UK

In a significant development, a new pathway has been established to reunite families torn apart during the 2021 evacuation of Afghanistan.

This initiative aims to bring together parents and children who were separated amidst the chaos following the Taliban’s takeover and the subsequent airlift from Kabul airport.

This new route falls under the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS), which was launched following the impactful ‘Betrayal of the Brave’ campaign by the Mail.

This campaign pressured the government to extend sanctuary to Afghan interpreters and other vulnerable individuals who had risked their lives supporting British forces.

The Refugee Council has praised this move, describing it as “hugely welcome” and potentially “life-changing” for Afghan families who have endured prolonged separation.

Under this scheme, children who arrived in the UK unaccompanied can now apply to bring their parents over, while adults who came alone can seek to reunite with siblings or partners.

Government Commitment and Procedures

The commitment to facilitate family reunification was initially made by the Conservative government and is now being implemented by Labour.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the government’s dedication to this cause, acknowledging the urgency created by the rapid evacuation from Kabul.

Application Deadline and Considerations

The ACRS pathway for separated families officially opened recently, with applications being accepted over the next three months.

The Home Office clarified that additional family members might be considered in exceptional cases, ensuring flexibility for complex situations.

Ongoing Efforts and Separate Schemes

Aside from ACRS, the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (Arap) addresses the needs of Afghans who had previously worked with the UK government and their families before the Taliban’s rise to power.

This new initiative marks a pivotal step towards healing the wounds of separation caused by the Afghan crisis, offering hope and practical support to affected families.
