Mpho Maruping Overcomes Career-Ending Injury in South Africa to Find New Purpose as a Video Analyst for Banyana Banyana and Young Africans

In the fast-paced world of professional football, fortunes can change in an instant, but few stories are as compelling as that of Mpho Maruping.

At just 30, Maruping’s decade-long football career was abruptly cut short due to a persistent ACL injury he picked up during his time at the University of Pretoria – AmaTuks. This injury, an unwelcome reminder of his past, forced him to leave the game he loved.

Maruping’s football journey was marked by significant contributions across South African clubs. He played with zeal for teams like Nathi Lions, Bloemfontein Celtic, Free State Stars, TS Sporting, and Royal AM.

Each club felt the impact of his talent and energy. Yet, his career ended too soon, a stark reminder of the game’s inherent fragility.

“My first season in the PSL was when I sustained a career-threatening injury,” Maruping recounts to FARPost. “I tore my ACL, and although recovery should have taken eight months, it stretched to a year. I was never the same afterward.”

When his career came to a halt, Maruping faced a personal crisis. “I didn’t tell anyone when I retired because it felt overwhelming,” he shares. “The stress was immense.

I talked to my wife, prayed, and that’s when I decided to stop playing.”

Finding a New Path

Interestingly, Maruping’s football days were not his only passion.

While at Tuks, he developed an interest in videography at Vega Branding School. Little did he know that this skill would later become pivotal in his life.

“I’m grateful to the University of Pretoria board and Coach Nkululeko Malgas,” Maruping says. “Coach Malgas’s mentorship was crucial in guiding me toward analysis. I still consider him one of my mentors.”

Maruping returned to Tuks to learn more about video analysis. “I spoke with Tebogo Monyai, Tuks’ chief scout, who welcomed me due to my past contributions as a player.

He helped me understand video analysis better.”

Monyai, also the vice president of the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), recalls advising Maruping to focus on video and performance analysis. “Mpho was already studying videography and had some coaching licenses. I suggested he move into this less saturated field,” Monyai tells FARPost.

Maruping began volunteering at Tuks and soon found a role as a video analyst for Pretoria Callies, transitioning from the glamorous world of football to a quieter, more technical field.

A Life-Changing Phone Call

Eager to grow, Maruping sought an opportunity with Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis. Despite his limited experience, Ellis recognized his potential and promised to consider him for future roles.

Struggling to support his growing family, Maruping took on a side job with Bolt. One day, while working, he received a call from Ellis during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco

. This call would change his life.

“I had a client in the car when Coach Desiree called me,” Maruping recalls. “I was overwhelmed with joy. It felt like a new beginning.”

Ellis, explaining her decision, mentions that Maruping’s resume and potential stood out.

“We needed an analyst last minute, and Mpho was available. His background in videography made him a great fit,” she says.

Maruping quickly transitioned from driving for Bolt to flying to Morocco. “We started working together, and it’s been great. Mpho’s understanding of the game is excellent,” Ellis explains.

Redemption and Success

Maruping’s new role proved transformative.

His analytical skills contributed significantly to South Africa’s victory at WAFCON and an impressive run to the Last 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

His journey continued with Young Africans (Yanga) in Tanzania. There, his analytical insights helped the team win the Tanzania Premier League and FA Cup and achieve a remarkable quarterfinal run in the CAF Champions League.

Yanga head coach Miguel Gamondi praised Maruping’s dedication. “Mpho is a focused and valuable analyst. His work ethic and determination are exceptional,” Gamondi tells FARPost.

A Story of Resilience and Hope

Maruping’s journey is a testament to resilience, hope, and faith.

From facing despair to reaching new heights, his story inspires anyone facing adversity. It highlights the support of loved ones, unexpected opportunities, and the inner strength we all possess.
