A Massachusetts mother is demanding an explanation after her six-year-old son was left on a school bus for over four hours.
Ronda Johnson had been eagerly waiting to hear about her son Justin’s first day of first grade, but when the school bus failed to drop him off at 3:30 PM, her excitement turned into worry.
Desperate Attempts to Find Her Son
For more than an hour, Johnson tried to locate her child.
The bus tracking app wasn’t working, and despite numerous calls to the school and dispatch center, she couldn’t get any answers.
In a state of panic, she called dispatch repeatedly, asking where the bus and her son were.
She was assured that her son had boarded the bus and that they would check the bus yard, according to CBS Boston.
A Long Wait and Frustration
After being placed on hold, Johnson was eventually informed that her son had been found and would be dropped off at 7 PM.
However, she never received details on where he was discovered.
When the bus finally arrived, Johnson was overwhelmed with frustration.
She rushed on board to find her son asleep in his seat, covered in drool from exhaustion.
“Four hours of my son being on a bus is unacceptable,” she declared.
Reunited but Unsettled
Justin, who attends Henderson Elementary School just a mile from their home, was finally reunited with his mother.
He described his ordeal to a news outlet, saying it felt like hours.
Johnson reported that while the bus driver apologized, he did not explain why he missed the stop.
She was informed that the bus lacked a monitor due to staffing shortages.
School’s Response and Future Concerns
The Boston Public Schools responded with a statement emphasizing that student safety on buses is a top priority.
They assured that they would investigate the incident and take appropriate follow-up actions.
In the meantime, Johnson has had to adjust her work schedule because her son is now afraid to ride the bus.
She believes that better communication and safety measures are needed to prevent such incidents in the future.
Ongoing Questions
As of Wednesday, school officials had yet to disclose the exact location where her son was found.
Johnson continues to seek answers and improvements to ensure her children’s safety on school buses.
