In a recent court ruling, a Colorado resident has been handed a sentence of eight years and one month in prison, along with three years of supervised release.
This comes after his conviction for cyberstalking and obstructing justice in Hawaii.
The Crimes Unveiled
Between May and August 2022, John B. Hart, a 54-year-old from Louisville, was embroiled in a disturbing campaign of harassment while residing in Hawaii.
Hart targeted his ex-girlfriend, Jane Doe 1, her former partner, John Doe 1, and her then-partner, John Doe 2.
He went to great lengths to disguise his identity, often pretending to be John Doe 1 while harassing the other victims.
Hart used various “burner apps” to create multiple fake phone numbers, further complicating the investigation by pretending to be his victims and even reporting false threats to authorities.
Details of the Harassment
Hart’s actions included sending Jane Doe 1 threatening messages encouraging her to harm herself and falsely accusing John Doe 2 of human trafficking.
He also created online dating profiles in Jane Doe 1’s name to harass her at work, and even went as far as spray-painting her car and placing metal spikes near her tires.
These acts were meant to intimidate and harm his victims both physically and emotionally.
The Investigation and Legal Proceedings
After his arrest in August 2023, Hart pleaded guilty to three counts of cyberstalking and one count of obstruction of justice.
In court, he admitted to his numerous offenses, which included threatening Jane Doe 1’s life and spreading lies about her and her partners.
The investigation, led by the FBI, was overseen by Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, U.S. Attorney Clare E. Connors, and other key figures in the Department of Justice.
Senior Trial Attorney Mona Sedky and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara D. Ayabe and Aislinn Affinito were instrumental in prosecuting the case.
With Hart now serving his sentence, the case highlights the severe legal consequences of cyberstalking and attempts to obstruct justice.
