LTA Council Member’s Controversial Remarks
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has taken decisive action in response to a controversial statement made by council member Wasim Haq.
Haq, appointed to the LTA Council in March 2021 with a focus on promoting diversity and inclusion in tennis, faced backlash for a social media post over the weekend.
Offensive Comparison Draws Swift Condemnation
In the now-deleted post, Haq suggested that “Adolf Hitler would be proud of Benjamin Netanyahu” in the context of Israel’s military action in Gaza.
The LTA Board swiftly condemned the remarks, stating that the post was “unacceptable” and did not align with the organization’s values.
Immediate Dismissal from Council Role
Following a thorough consideration of the matter, the LTA Board decided to remove Wasim Haq from his role as an independent councillor with immediate effect.
The decision reflects the LTA’s commitment to upholding its values and maintaining a culture of respect and inclusion within the organization.
Haq’s Apology and Explanation
In response to the controversy, Haq issued an apology, expressing regret for any offense caused by his initial post. He emphasized that the comparison was related to the actions of two individuals and not an attack on any specific community.
Despite the apology, the LTA deemed the remarks as incompatible with their values, leading to Haq’s dismissal.
Ongoing Investigations by Other Organizations
While the LTA has taken decisive action, other organizations, including England Golf and the Football Association Council, where Haq also serves, may conduct their own investigations into the matter.
The Football Association has confirmed that they are looking into the comment made by Haq.
Context of Israel’s Ongoing Military Action
The controversial remarks come amid Israel’s continued military action in Gaza, rejecting calls for a ceasefire.
The conflict has resulted in casualties, with Haq’s comments adding a layer of controversy and drawing attention from various organizations, including the Football Association, which is actively investigating the matter.
