L’Ormarins King’s Plate (LKP) has a new name, and racing is changing

The L’Ormarins King’s Plate (LKP), the Cape’s renowned weight-for-age mile, has a new moniker, but racing in the province is undergoing a complete transition.

The Oh Susanna Ladies International, an L’Ormarins project, is the newest horse racing fixture in the Western Cape.

It is the first professional women-only race to take place in Kenilworth, and it is named after Oh Susanna, the three-year-old filly who made history by becoming the first to win the Sun Met in 2018.

The first Oh Susanna Ladies International will be conducted at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday, January 7, 2023 on LKP day for a stake of R200,000.

“Over the years, female work riders have contributed much to racing, and we think this is a terrific idea to recognize their important job. According to Justin Vermaak, executive director of Cape Racing, “I would like to appreciate and thank L’Ormarins for their sponsorship and support of this event.

The riding committee will be led by Gina Goldsmith and Craig Du Plooy, who will work closely with the National Horse Racing Authority to approve candidates. Candidates must clear the starting gates and have previous work-riding experience.

O’Meara Rusike, the first black female jockey in Zimbabwe, now resides in the United Kingdom but plans to compete in the Oh Susanna Ladies International.

The Hollywoodbets Matchem Stakes and Hollywoodbets Diana Stakes will be held at Durbanville on Saturday to continue local racing.

Another great audience is anticipated in Durbanville after last week’s Heritage Day meal, even if the day ended in controversy. The hard-ridden Somerset Maugham entry at Snaith Racing was given the Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy. It happened after the stipendiary stewards sustained an interference objection.
