London’s Coronation, Police Warn Protesters of Swift Action

The police have warned that any protesters who try to disrupt the coronation will face “very swift action” from them.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan stated that the force will not tolerate any criminal activity disguised as a protest during the event.

The police have launched a massive security and policing operation, with 11,500 officers on duty on Saturday, and 10,000 military personnel taking part in the ceremony.

Specialist teams have started to scour the area of central London where the events will take place and will keep an eye on the crowds for signs of suspicious behavior.

The police plan, called Operation Golden Orb, has been re-examined after an incident outside Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening when a man allegedly had a knife and threw shotgun cartridges over the palace gates.

Mr Adelekan said: “We’ve debriefed our plans after that incident just to make sure there are no gaps, and we’re absolutely confident that we’ve got a plan that will deliver the coronation in such a manner that everyone will come to London and celebrate, and there will be no issues whatsoever.”

The police will have an extremely low threshold when dealing with anyone or anything that could disrupt the event, and protesters will face the same level of action.

Under new laws to curb protests, which came into effect on Wednesday, protesters who block roads will face up to 12 months behind bars.

However, Security Minister Tom Tugendhat said the celebrations would “showcase our liberty and our democracy”.

An official letter warning of the new powers was sent to anti-monarchy group Republic, who said their campaign around the coronation would proceed as planned.

Republic boss Graham Smith said it was “very odd” that the letter came from the Home Office and described it as “intimidatory”.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to travel to central London for the event, including scores of foreign VIPs who need close protection.

Commander Karen Findlay, who is Gold Command for the policing operation, said there were more VIPs for the coronation than there were for the Queen’s funeral.

A total of 29,000 officer shifts will be used during the days around the coronation, with specialist teams including armed police, sniffer dogs, mounted officers, and marine officers on the Thames all taking part.

The police’s warning against disrupting the coronation event implies that they are ready to take swift action against any form of criminal activity camouflaged as a protest.

With a security operation of 11,500 officers on duty and 10,000 military personnel taking part, the police have assured that the event will be peaceful, and everyone will be able to enjoy it.

The new laws that came into effect on Wednesday, aimed at curbing protests, have been described as “intimidatory” by anti-monarchy group Republic, but the group has said that their campaign will proceed as planned.

It is expected that hundreds of thousands of people will attend the coronation, including scores of foreign VIPs who will require close protection.

The scale of the event has necessitated the deployment of 29,000 officer shifts and specialist teams comprising armed police, sniffer dogs, mounted officers, and marine officers.

It is a historic and unprecedented mobilization in terms of scale, nature, and specialness of the event to the public, the service, and all communities in London, the UK, and globally, according to Commander Karen Findlay, who is Gold Command for the policing operation.

There will also be 1,800 registered events taking place in London over the weekend.
