In response to ongoing concerns from Limpopo Betway Premiership teams about insufficient support, Tshitereke Matibe, the MEC for LEDET, has promised a renewed effort to back professional teams as the new season approaches.

The 2024/25 Betway Premiership is set to start this weekend, featuring three teams from Limpopo.

Limpopo’s Representation in the New Season

Polokwane City FC, Sekhukhune United, and Magesi FC will represent Limpopo in the upcoming season.

Each of these teams currently receives R1 million from the Limpopo Tourism Agency, a branch of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment & Tourism (LEDET).

Despite this support, the clubs have voiced concerns that additional financial backing could enhance their competitive edge and boost their contributions to the province’s tourism industry.

Plans for Increased Support

During a recent “Tourism Thursdays” campaign, MEC Tshitereke Matibe reassured the teams of continued support.

He announced plans to meet with all Betway Premiership teams soon, alongside Funani Maseko, the MEC for Sport, Arts, and Culture.

“We’re committed to supporting our teams,” Matibe said.

“We understand that sports tourism is a significant factor in our province’s appeal.

When people come for football, they often stay to explore our natural attractions.”

The Importance of Continued Support

Matibe emphasized that this support is crucial for maintaining and enhancing the teams’ competitive performance.

“We know that supporting sports contributes to tourism,” he explained.

“It’s a win-win situation—better teams attract more visitors, and those visitors help highlight the beauty of our province.”

Matibe confirmed that a meeting with the teams is scheduled within the next couple of weeks, ensuring that their support through Tourism will persist.
