With an intense quarter-final against Mamelodi Sundowns just around the corner, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has shared crucial updates on his squad’s injury concerns.
The two teams, set to clash this Saturday at FNB Stadium for the Carling Knockout Cup, are no strangers to competition, having already faced each other earlier this season in a Betway Premiership match.
Sundowns, also known as Masandawana, head into this showdown as the favorites.
Key Players Sidelined for the Quarter-Final
Coach Nabi confirmed that Chiefs will be missing two of their key players due to long-term injuries.
Mduduzi Mdantsane and George Matlou, both essential to the team’s lineup, have been dealing with injuries that have kept them from the field for several months.
Matlou, in particular, has faced an extended absence and has not yet joined the team’s training sessions this season as he works towards recovery.
Nabi emphasized the importance of giving Matlou adequate time to regain fitness, engage in practice matches, and reconnect with teammates before rejoining official games.
Mfundo Vilakazi: Minor Setback, Likely to Return
There’s hope, however, for the young talent Mfundo Vilakazi.
Despite appearing to sustain an injury during Chiefs’ recent 2-2 draw with Magesi FC, Nabi clarified that Vilakazi’s issue was more fatigue than an actual injury.
“Mfundo, we don’t believe that it’s an injury,” Nabi stated, explaining that Vilakazi experienced cramps after an intense game.
The coaching staff is optimistic he will recover in time for the Saturday match.
Bongani Sam Still Awaiting His Chiefs Debut
Another name that will be missing from Saturday’s lineup is Bongani Sam.
The former Orlando Pirates defender has yet to make his official debut for Kaizer Chiefs this season due to injury.
While the team remains hopeful for his eventual return, there’s currently no confirmed timeline for his recovery.
Looking Ahead
With injury concerns looming over some top players, Chiefs face an uphill battle against a strong Sundowns squad this weekend.
Coach Nabi’s careful management of player recoveries and readiness will be key as Chiefs prepare for the rest of the season, balancing the pressures of competition with long-term player health.
