Widely regarded as one of the best fielders the sport has ever seen, Rhodes captivated fans worldwide with his athleticism and flair during his nine-year career with the Proteas.

A Moment That Changed the Game

Rhodes made his One Day International (ODI) debut in South Africa’s opening match of the 1992 Cricket World Cup against Australia.

However, it was during the Proteas’ fifth match of the tournament, against Pakistan, that Rhodes delivered one of the most memorable moments in cricket history.

With Pakistan sitting at 135/2, batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq, then on 48 runs, attempted a risky run but was sent back by his captain, Imran Khan.

The ball rolled toward Rhodes at backward point, and in a moment of pure instinct, he sprinted in, gathered the ball, and raced to the stumps.

What happened next became legendary.

Rhodes, holding the ball, leaped through the air in a full dive, smashing the stumps and running out Inzamam.

That iconic play, immortalized in a photograph by Jim Fenwick, is still celebrated as one of the most breathtaking moments of the 1992 World Cup.

A Career Defined by Brilliance

Jonty Rhodes’ impact on the field didn’t stop there.

Following his World Cup heroics, Rhodes solidified his reputation as a Proteas star.

Over his career, he played 52 Test matches and 245 ODIs, becoming the first South African cricketer to achieve 100 catches in ODIs—a testament to his unparalleled fielding skills.

Beyond his brilliance on the field, Rhodes also explored his love for hockey, representing South Africa in the sport on multiple occasions.

Coaching and a Continued Love for Cricket

After retiring from international cricket in 2003, Rhodes transitioned into coaching.

He took up the role of fielding coach for the Proteas and later worked with Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Since 2023, he has been coaching the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and joined the Durban Super Giants in the SA20 league.
