The British government has confirmed that it is aware of the detention of a former security guard who worked at the UK Embassy in Moscow, following allegations from Russian authorities that the man was involved in an intelligence operation linked to Ukraine.
A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign Office said London was examining the circumstances surrounding the case and attempting to establish what had happened.
“We are aware of this. We are establishing facts,” the spokesperson told TASS.
The brief statement represents London’s initial public response to allegations announced by Russia’s Federal Security Service.
Foreign Office Stops Short of Addressing Russian Allegations
The British government did not immediately comment on the substance of the accusations made against the former embassy security worker.
London has neither confirmed the Russian account of his alleged activities nor publicly addressed claims that he collected sensitive information concerning British diplomats.
Instead, the Foreign Office indicated that officials were still determining the facts surrounding the detention.
The cautious response comes as the allegations involve not only a former worker connected to the British diplomatic mission but also claims of a potential threat against senior UK diplomats.
FSB Accuses Former Guard of Working With Ukrainian Intelligence
Russia’s FSB earlier announced that it had detained a Russian citizen who previously worked for a security company providing protection to the British Embassy in Moscow.
The Russian security agency alleged that the man was acting as an agent of Ukraine’s Security Service, known as the SBU.
According to the FSB, he gathered information about British diplomatic personnel and passed material to Ukrainian blogger Dmitry Karpenko, who is also known as Apostle Dmitry.
Russian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the suspect on allegations of state treason.
Russia Claims Information on British Diplomats Was Collected
The FSB alleges that the former security worker collected detailed information about employees of the British diplomatic mission.
Russian authorities have previously said the material included photographs, addresses, vehicles used by diplomats, information about meetings and travel, and details concerning security arrangements at British diplomatic facilities.
The FSB claims the suspect’s previous security responsibilities gave him access to information concerning the embassy and the residence of the British ambassador.
Those claims have not been independently verified, and the UK Foreign Office’s latest statement did not endorse the Russian account.
Moscow Alleges Plot Against British Ambassador
The most serious accusation made by the FSB concerns what Russian officials claim Ukrainian intelligence intended to do with the information.
The Russian security service alleged that Ukrainian authorities planned to use the material to prepare attacks against the British ambassador and other UK diplomatic personnel in Moscow.
According to the FSB’s account, the alleged operation would then have been presented as an attack carried out by Russia.
No independent evidence confirming such a plan was included in the British response, and London has so far said only that it is establishing the facts.
FSB Claims Alleged Operation Sought to Draw UK Into Conflict
Russian authorities have further claimed that the supposed plot was designed to provoke a significant escalation between London and Moscow.
The FSB alleged that Ukraine intended to use attacks against British diplomats to increase pressure on the UK to become directly involved in the conflict with Russia.
Moscow also claimed the alleged operation was intended to encourage additional British weapons deliveries to Ukraine and stronger sanctions against Russia.
The allegations represent the FSB’s characterization of the suspected operation and have not been publicly confirmed by British authorities.

The detention comes against the backdrop of deeply deteriorated relations between Britain and Russia since the escalation of the war in Ukraine.
London has been one of Kyiv’s major international supporters, providing military assistance while imposing extensive sanctions against Moscow.
Russia, meanwhile, has repeatedly accused Britain of playing a significant role in supporting Ukrainian military operations.
The involvement of a former worker connected to the UK Embassy and allegations concerning threats against British diplomatic personnel could add another source of tension between the two governments.
