Russian authorities say Ukraine launched hundreds of drones against targets across Russia overnight, in what Moscow described as a widespread aerial operation spanning more than a dozen regions as well as the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said air-defense forces intercepted and destroyed 448 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles between 8 p.m. Moscow time on September 9 and 8 a.m. on September 10.
The overnight attacks were accompanied by an unmanned boat operation targeting the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, where Russian officials reported dozens of civilian injuries and damage along the waterfront.
Defense Ministry Says 448 Drones Were Intercepted
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, drones were destroyed over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Rostov, Tula, Dagestan, Kalmykia and Krasnodar regions.
Russian-controlled Crimea was also included in the ministry’s account, while additional drones were reportedly intercepted over the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.
The figures provided by Russian authorities could not be independently verified from the information released about the operation.
Rostov Region Reports Around 90 Drones Destroyed
Rostov Governor Yury Slyusar said approximately 90 drones were destroyed across his region during the overnight attacks.
According to the governor, interceptions were recorded around Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Taganrog, Novoshakhtinsk and Volgodonsk as well as 16 other districts of the region.
Drone fragments damaged two private homes and several vehicles in the Millerovsky District, Slyusar said. Four other homes were reportedly left without electricity after a power line was damaged.
Falling debris also ignited dry vegetation in the Tarasovsky District, although authorities said the fire was extinguished without casualties.
Woman Killed After Drone Debris Hits Voronezh Home
The most serious reported fatality occurred in Borisoglebsk in Russia’s Voronezh Region, where authorities said drone debris fell onto a private residence and started a fire.
Regional Governor Alexander Gusev said a woman born in 1983 was killed. Two other people suffered injuries and were given medical assistance at the scene.
Russian authorities said air defenses destroyed 19 Ukrainian drones over the Voronezh Region during the wider overnight operation.
Homes, Vehicles and Power Infrastructure Damaged
Additional property damage was reported elsewhere in Voronezh.
Officials said a residential building was destroyed by a fire following a drone strike, while windows at a technical college were damaged. A cultural center door, two power lines, an electricity pylon, a bus and a car were also reportedly affected.
In another district, authorities reported shattered windows at an apartment building and a private residence, as well as damage to six vehicles and a garage.
Fires Reported at Makhachkala Port and Theater
Dagestan also experienced damage during the attacks, according to regional officials.
Acting regional official Fyodor Shchukin said falling drone fragments sparked fires at port infrastructure in Makhachkala and at the Avar Music and Drama Theater.
Emergency personnel extinguished both fires, and authorities reported no casualties from those incidents.
Ten Drones Reportedly Destroyed Over Kaluga
Russian officials also reported interceptions in the Kaluga Region, southwest of Moscow.
Governor Vladislav Shapsha said air-defense forces destroyed 10 Ukrainian UAVs over the region.
The attacks across geographically separated areas underscored the scale of the overnight operation reported by Moscow, stretching from western Russia to the North Caucasus and areas surrounding the Caspian Sea.
Unmanned Boats Target Sochi Waterfront
Alongside the aerial attacks, Russian authorities reported that unmanned boats targeted Sochi on the Black Sea coast.
A fire broke out along the city’s seafront following the attack, prompting emergency teams to respond to the affected area.
The regional crisis center said 28 people were injured, including two children. Three adults and one child remained hospitalized following the incident.
Sochi Mayor Andrey Proshunin said the hospitalized victims were not believed to be in life-threatening condition.
Primorskaya Embankment and Beach Facilities Damaged
The unmanned boat attack also caused damage to beach infrastructure and part of Sochi’s Primorskaya Embankment, according to the regional crisis center.
Emergency and municipal teams were deployed to deal with the aftermath, while local officials began assessing damage and restoring affected infrastructure.
Proshunin instructed city officials and district authorities to prioritize sanitary safety and accelerate repair work in the damaged waterfront area.
Overnight Attacks Extend Deep Across Russian Territory
The September 9-10 operation represents another large-scale episode in Ukraine’s expanding campaign of long-range strikes against targets inside Russia, according to Moscow’s account.
While Russian authorities reported intercepting the overwhelming number of incoming drones, falling debris and successful strikes still caused fires, infrastructure damage and civilian casualties in several locations.
The reported death in Borisoglebsk and the 28 injuries in Sochi highlighted the human impact of the overnight attacks as the conflict continues to extend far beyond the immediate front lines in Ukraine.
