Jon Stewart, known for his sharp political humor, took aim at the Democratic Party’s inability to mount a strong opposition to former President Donald Trump after his electoral win.
On a recent episode of The Daily Show, Stewart mocked what he sees as a lackluster resistance, urging liberals to “saddle up” and stop backing down in the fight against Trump.
Stewart Critiques Liberals for Toning Down Rhetoric
Stewart pointed out a sharp contrast in the rhetoric from liberals before Trump took office versus now.
He noted how, before the election, many on the left were clear-eyed about the potential dangers of a Trump presidency.
However, after Trump’s victory, many seemed to soften their criticism.
He called out Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski of Morning Joe for their dramatic shift in tone.
Scarborough and Brzezinski’s Shift Sparks Criticism
Stewart ridiculed the married couple for meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago after previously labeling him as a fascist.
“Joe and Mika Brzezinski Scarborough, who famously warned of the growing threat of Trump’s fascism, had an interesting announcement to make,” Stewart quipped, sarcastically remarking that they had “learned nothing” from their earlier stance.
He continued by poking fun at Scarborough, asking if he had really “laid down the gauntlet” in his meeting with Trump.
Stewart also reacted to Brzezinski’s justification for the meeting, when she asked, “why wouldn’t we meet with [Trump]?”
“Uh, because you said he was Hitler!” Stewart responded, drawing laughs from the audience.
Stewart Criticizes Biden’s Actions Amidst Political Tensions
Stewart didn’t hold back when discussing President Joe Biden’s recent trip to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.
“What the fk?” Stewart exclaimed.
“In the middle of all this, he disappeared to the rainforest?”
His frustration with the lack of urgent action from Democrats was evident as he urged them to stop whining about norms and start exploiting loopholes to get things done.
“They don’t give a fk about your norms,” Stewart added, advising liberals to “become the loophole guys that figure out how to get s**t done.”
Stewart Compares Democrats to ‘The Nurse’s Office’
Stewart’s criticism of the Democratic Party was unrelenting, comparing their approach to Trump and the Republican Party’s strategy to playing checkers.
“Republicans are playing chess, and the Democrats are in the nurse’s office because they glued their balls to their thigh,” Stewart joked, highlighting his frustration with what he sees as a lack of effective action from the left.
Backlash Against Scarborough and Brzezinski
The Morning Joe hosts faced backlash from both liberal and conservative media figures following their meeting with Trump.
Ana Navarro from The View criticized them for being “opportunistic,” questioning whether they had changed their stance due to the shift in political power.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, former Fox News host Megyn Kelly also weighed in, calling them “dishonest jokes of faux journalists” and accusing them of flip-flopping for political gain.
Scarborough and Brzezinski Defend Their Actions
Despite the criticism, Scarborough and Brzezinski defended their meeting with Trump.
They dismissed the media backlash, claiming it highlighted the growing “disconnect between social media and the real world.”
They stood by their decision, despite the growing polarization surrounding their actions.
