Lauren Westerman has married her longtime friend Karl Holmes, more than three years after her marriage to rugby league star Joe Westerman collapsed following a highly publicised infidelity scandal.
Lauren, 38, and Holmes, also 38, began dating toward the end of 2023 after years of friendship. The couple married last month and have since shared photographs from their wedding celebrations online.
Lauren, who has taken Holmes’ surname, described her new husband as her “best friend” and said she felt fortunate to have married someone with whom she shared such a close bond.
A Marriage Shattered by a Viral Video
Lauren’s previous marriage attracted widespread attention in February 2023 after footage emerged online showing Westerman in an intimate encounter with another woman following what was reported to have been a lengthy drinking session.
The incident took place in an alley behind a Greggs outlet in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, and the brief video quickly spread across social media.
Lauren subsequently confirmed that she was not the woman shown in the footage and said the situation had been particularly painful because the couple had three children.
At the time, she made clear that she had no intention of returning to the relationship, saying she wanted to rebuild her life and demonstrate to her children that such behaviour should not be accepted in a relationship.
Westerman Apologised After the Scandal
Westerman, who was then playing for Castleford Tigers, publicly apologised after the footage emerged and described his actions as a serious mistake.
He also attributed his behaviour to his troubled relationship with alcohol and said he could not remember everything that happened that night.
The rugby league star was fined by his club and required to undertake community work following the incident. He also faced considerable criticism and taunting from opposing supporters.
Lauren Finds Love Again
Lauren’s new relationship with Holmes developed after the breakdown of her marriage, with the pair eventually progressing from friendship to romance.
Holmes proposed during a trip to Gran Canaria in April, and the couple later exchanged vows in front of family and friends.
A family friend said the wedding represented a positive turning point for Lauren after the intense public scrutiny surrounding her previous relationship.
The friend said Lauren had been deeply embarrassed by the viral footage but had since moved forward and was now happy in her new relationship.
Holmes Becomes a Source of Support
Holmes has reportedly helped Lauren regain confidence and trust following the end of her marriage to Westerman.
The HGV mechanic has also spoken publicly about his affection for his wife, describing her as an exceptional person and praising the support they provide one another.
During the wedding reception, Holmes became emotional while speaking about Lauren and told guests how strongly he felt about their relationship.
The couple later honeymooned in Morocco with their combined six children from previous relationships.
Westerman Has Also Moved On
Westerman has since established a new relationship of his own. The former England international began dating estate agent Alison Hopkinson, 37, after the scandal and the pair have been engaged for around two years.
He has also stepped away from professional rugby following a career spanning nearly two decades, during which he won two England caps.
Westerman said previously that the controversy had forced him to reassess his life away from the rugby field and that he was focused on creating a happier environment for his children.
A New Life After Public Heartbreak
While Westerman has moved on with Hopkinson, Lauren’s marriage to Holmes marks another significant chapter in the aftermath of one of the most publicised moments of her former relationship.
The couple’s wedding comes after years in which Lauren rebuilt her personal life away from the intense attention that followed the scandal.
For Lauren and Holmes, the focus now appears to be on their family and their future together, with their wedding marking a fresh start after a difficult period that played out publicly.
