The family of former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe has announced plans to hold a public memorial later this year, following a private funeral service that will be attended only by relatives and close friends.

Family Requests Privacy Ahead of Funeral

In a statement released on behalf of the family, relatives acknowledged the widespread public interest surrounding Widdecombe’s funeral arrangements but confirmed that the first service will remain a private occasion.

The family said invitations have already been sent to those closest to the late politician and asked the public to respect their wishes during this period of mourning. They also expressed gratitude for the many messages of sympathy received since her death.

Public Memorial to Be Held Later This Year

While the initial funeral will be restricted to family members and invited guests, the family confirmed that a larger public memorial is being planned for later in the year. Further information about the event, including the date and location, will be announced in due course.

The memorial is expected to provide an opportunity for members of the public, supporters, and colleagues to pay tribute to Widdecombe’s life and public service.

Murder Investigation Continues

Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon, on July 9. Authorities reported that she had sustained serious head injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing following the court appearance of 28-year-old Joshua Kerry, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, who was charged with her murder during proceedings held on Tuesday.

Prosecutors Outline Alleged Events

According to prosecutors, the events leading up to Widdecombe’s death began on July 8 while she was eating lunch at her bungalow. It is alleged that Kerry arrived outside the property in a red Vauxhall Corsa before entering through the front door.

The case is continuing through the courts as investigators pursue the circumstances surrounding the death of the veteran politician, whose career spanned decades in British public life.
