An Illinois mother accused of killing her two-year-old son was experiencing what her attorney described as a “psychotic episode” at the time of the child’s death, adding a new dimension to a case that has drawn comparisons with the high-profile Lindsay Clancy proceedings.
Corie Walsh, 40, is facing murder charges after her son, Barrett “Bear” Walsh, was discovered dead inside the family’s home in Frankfort last Tuesday.
Attorney Andrea Lyon addressed the circumstances surrounding the case in a statement released Friday night, describing the situation as a devastating tragedy for the entire Walsh family.
Defense Points to Alleged Mental Health Crisis
Lyon said Walsh was experiencing a psychotic episode when the incident occurred and argued that a detailed investigation into the circumstances would be necessary to understand what happened.
“This is a tragedy, for the Walsh family all of whom are mourning the loss of this child,” Lyon said in the statement.
“It is also a tragedy in that Corie herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened.”
The attorney added that she hoped a thorough examination of the evidence would allow the circumstances of the case to be understood in their entirety.
Walsh Was Discussing Lindsay Clancy Case
Court documents obtained by NBC 5 Chicago reportedly indicate that Walsh had been actively discussing the Lindsay Clancy case in a group chat just hours before her son’s death.
The connection has attracted particular attention because Clancy’s own trial concerns the deaths of her three young children in January 2023.
According to prosecutors’ filings, Walsh allegedly told police that she killed Barrett because she believed he was “the devil” and “the Antichrist.”
Those alleged statements are expected to form part of the evidence surrounding the circumstances of the toddler’s death.
Neighbor Found Toddler and Called for Help
The disturbing events came to light when police were called to the Walsh residence and a neighbor was found performing CPR on the toddler in the front yard.
Barrett was later pronounced dead.
Court documents state that the child died from “asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck,” according to prosecutors.
The circumstances described in the filing paint a chaotic picture of the scene inside the family home.
Mother Found Injured in Bathtub
Walsh was reportedly discovered upstairs by the same neighbor lying fully dressed in a bathtub containing bloody water.
Prosecutors said she had suffered a knife wound to her thigh, with the neighbor using a towel to apply pressure to the injury.
The circumstances indicated an apparent attempt to harm herself, according to the court documents.
Walsh was subsequently taken to a hospital, where authorities said she allegedly admitted to killing her son.
Other Children Were Inside the Home
Walsh’s husband was reportedly out of state when the incident occurred.
Police said another infant was found unharmed inside the residence, while two school-aged children returned home amid the unfolding emergency, according to the court filing.
The presence of the other children has added to the distress surrounding the investigation as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events.
Neighbors Draw Parallels With Clancy Case
Residents in the Frankfort community have described themselves as shocked by the death and the allegations against Walsh.
Carolyn Pappas, a neighbor, told NBC Chicago that the circumstances immediately reminded residents of the Clancy case.
“This is just absolutely devastating, that this could be another Lindsay Clancy situation in our neighborhood, in our community,” Pappas said.
She added that the tragedy was a reminder that people may be struggling with serious problems without those around them realizing it.
Clancy Trial Ends in Mistrial
The comparisons emerged as Clancy’s own murder trial reached an unexpected conclusion.
Clancy’s trial over the January 2023 deaths of her three children ended in a mistrial Friday after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
The decision does not amount to an acquittal.
A mistrial allows prosecutors to seek another trial, meaning the case could return to court and begin again with jury selection.
Walsh Remains in Custody
Walsh was booked into the Will County Adult Detention Facility on Friday on three counts of murder.
She is expected to appear in court Tuesday, where the case will continue through the legal process.
Her attorney’s assertion that Walsh was experiencing a psychotic episode is a defense position, and the allegation itself does not determine the outcome of the criminal case.
The prosecution will still have to establish its case in court, while the defense is expected to present evidence concerning Walsh’s mental state and the events surrounding Barrett’s death.
