The Pogues’ Shane McGowan Honored in an Emotional Wake

A Heartfelt Farewell

Reports suggest that Shane McGowan, the late frontman of The Pogues, left a touching request for his funeral attendees, arranging €10,000 behind the bar of his cherished pub, The Thatched Cottage.

This generous gesture allowed selected guests to share a round of drinks in his honor, following his passing due to pneumonia at the age of 65.

An Emotional Gathering

Among the mourners were notable figures like Johnny Depp, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, and Shane’s bandmates who gathered at The Thatched Cottage in Nenagh, Co Tipperary.

Approximately 250 people attended the ‘official’ wake, where poignant tributes and reminiscences took place.

Tribute Through Music

The remaining members of The Pogues paid a heartfelt tribute to Shane, raising a toast as they sang a moving rendition of their renowned hit, “The Body of An American.”

The gathering required VIP passes, and it transpired after the star-studded funeral held at St Mary’s of the Rosary Church nearby.

An Intimate Affair

Reports mention that security personnel guarded the venue, ensuring a private and intimate atmosphere for the mourners, including Depp, who stayed until the early hours. Depp, a close friend of McGowan, had previously attended the singer’s wedding to Victoria Mary Clarke.

A Solemn Farewell

Shane’s widow and a select group of close friends shared heartfelt moments as they bid farewell to the beloved musician.

The funeral service, attended by luminaries like Nick Cave, Bob Geldof, and Depp, featured poignant prayers read by Depp and Hothouse Flowers’ Liam O’Maonlai.

Remembering a Legend

McGowan, famous for iconic tracks like “The Fairytale of New York,” embarked on a funeral procession that attracted thousands lining the streets from Dublin to Tipperary, his hometown. His coffin, draped in an Irish tricolour flag, was positioned near a significant photograph of the Pogues singer.

A Lasting Legacy

Shane McGowan’s passing coincided poignantly with Sinead O’Connor’s birthday, marking a significant day for Irish music.

McGowan, discharged from the hospital after battling viral encephalitis, left behind a legacy that continues to resonate, especially during the holiday season with his timeless hit expected to top the charts.
