Graham Potter brought an unexpected dose of humour to Sweden’s pre-match press conference after making a joke about Manchester City’s financial charges.

The Sweden manager was discussing the large number of player withdrawals from his squad ahead of the Nations League meeting with Bosnia and Herzegovina when he compared the situation with the number of charges involving Manchester City.

“In terms of how many withdrawals, I think we have had a similar number to Man City’s charges,” Potter said.

He later clarified that the remark was intended as a joke.

Gyokeres Struggles to Keep a Straight Face

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres was sitting alongside Potter during the press conference and appeared to struggle to contain his reaction to the comment.

The forward could be seen smiling as Potter delivered the quip, an understandable response given his current connection to Arsenal, one of Manchester City’s Premier League rivals.

The exchange quickly attracted attention on social media, where clips of Potter’s comment and Gyokeres’ reaction circulated among football supporters.

Joke Comes After City’s Landmark Verdict

Potter’s remark came only days after an independent Premier League commission found Manchester City guilty of serious financial-rule breaches covering nine seasons from 2009/10 to 2017/18.

According to the Premier League, the commission found that City had used “sham” contracts with commercial partners as part of arrangements that artificially inflated revenue and reduced costs. The league said the findings involved more than £900 million.

The commission also found that the club had submitted misstated accounts and significantly breached Premier League and UEFA spending limits during the period examined.

Manchester City Strongly Rejects the Findings

City has consistently denied wrongdoing and has now formally appealed the commission’s decision.

The club said the ruling contained what it described as material errors of law, principle and fact and maintained that it has substantial evidence supporting its position.

Manchester City lodged its appeal on October 1, with the Premier League confirming the following day that the case had been referred to an independent Appeal Board.

The appeal process means the commission’s findings remain subject to further legal review before the matter reaches a final conclusion.

City’s Proposed Defence Centres on Sponsorship Funding

One of the key issues expected to feature in City’s appeal concerns the funding behind some of the commercial agreements examined by the commission.

Reports indicate that City intends to argue that some of the disputed sponsorship money came from the Abu Dhabi government rather than directly from the club’s private ownership group.

The club’s position is that the commercial arrangements were legitimate and that the commission reached its conclusions on an incorrect understanding of the source of the funding.

The Premier League commission, however, reached a different conclusion in its findings.

Arsenal Could Be Affected by the Outcome

Gyokeres’ presence during Potter’s joke added another layer to the moment because the Sweden striker plays for Arsenal.

The Gunners are among Manchester City’s Premier League rivals, and the eventual outcome of the appeal could have implications for the competition depending on any sanctions that might ultimately be imposed.

No final sporting punishment has been confirmed while the appeal remains outstanding.

Appeal Will Determine the Next Stage

Under the Premier League’s accelerated process, the appeal is expected to be heard by an independent panel, with the proceedings conducted privately.

The league has confirmed that the appeal hearing will remain confidential until publication of the outcome is permitted.

Potential sanctions cannot be treated as settled while the appeal process is ongoing.

For now, Potter’s light-hearted remark has provided one of the more memorable reactions to a serious and long-running case, while City’s legal challenge moves forward behind closed doors.
