The royal family has lost one of its most trusted figures, as Graham Craker, known affectionately as ‘Crackers’ by Princes William and Harry, has passed away at the age of 77.
Craker, a former Metropolitan Police officer with an illustrious 35-year career, served as the personal protection officer to the princes for 15 years, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.
The Tragic Day of Princess Diana’s Passing
On that fateful day in 1997 when Princess Diana tragically died in a car crash, Craker was by the side of the young princes in Balmoral, Scotland.
He was there with them, their father, Prince Charles, and their grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
Reflecting on that emotional day in a 2017 interview with the New York Post, Craker recalled the heart-wrenching moment he spoke with William the morning after the news broke.
William, walking his dog, quietly thanked Craker for his condolences, a moment that Craker described as particularly moving.
A Key Presence During Diana’s Funeral
Craker’s bond with the princes was further highlighted during Princess Diana’s funeral.
As the family made their way behind the hearse carrying her body from St. James’s Palace to Westminster Abbey, Craker accompanied William and Harry, offering silent support.
He vividly remembered the emotional scenes on the M1 motorway when drivers on both sides stopped, exited their cars, and paid their respects by bowing as the procession passed.
A Special Bond That Lasted Years
The princes’ fondness for Craker was clear, not just in their words but in their actions as well.
In Harry’s memoir, Spare, he recalled the memorable moments when he and William affectionately called him “Crackers,” with fondness for his character and the joy he brought to their lives.
Even after his retirement in 2001, Craker remained an important figure in the princes’ lives.
He was invited to Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011, a gesture that demonstrated the lasting friendship between them.
A Life of Service Beyond the Royal Family
Throughout his life, Craker was not just dedicated to the royal family.
He was awarded the Royal Victorian Order by Queen Elizabeth II for his exceptional service and was honored as a Freeman of the City of London.
His life outside of royal duty included giving back to the community, working with charities such as Always Bee You, which supports adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues, and volunteering at the Southern Maltings creative centre in Ware.
Tributes Pour In for a True Gentleman
After his passing, Southern Maltings, where Craker had been a beloved volunteer, shared a heartfelt tribute to the man they fondly referred to as ‘our very own James Bond.’ In their post, they expressed their deep sadness at losing such a cherished friend and colleague.
He was described as a man with a contagious laugh and a generous spirit, always willing to help others.
His presence will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
Remembering Crackers
While Graham Craker was a father and grandfather to his own family, to the many people whose lives he touched, he was a loyal protector, a trusted colleague, and a friend.
His memory will live on, especially at Southern Maltings, where a glass will be raised in his honor.
Rest in peace, Crackers. You will be dearly missed.
