Dame Kelly Holmes and Andrew Wong kick off the golden service scholarship competition for 2024

During the launch event, the speakers delved into various aspects of success in the hospitality industry, emphasizing high-performance mindsets and the pivotal role of service in creating a remarkable restaurant experience.

The competition is accessible to individuals between the ages of 22 and 28 who are employed within the UK hospitality sector, where the utmost standards of front-of-house service are rigorously evaluated. Competitors are expected to demonstrate excellence in areas ranging from wine service to napkin folding, cutlery arrangement, and tableside carving.

The Gold Service Scholarship extends an array of industry-related rewards to its winners, designed to enhance their skills and knowledge. These incentives encompass tailored courses at the renowned Swiss hotel school in Lausanne, immersive trips to vineyards across Europe, and valuable work placements at the prestigious Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong.

Reflecting on his experience as last year’s recipient, Jupiter Humphrey-Bishop expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the unique educational programs and the invaluable connections he had forged within the industry through the scholarship.

Despite its traditional connotations, the Gold Service Scholarship is backed by influential figures in the hospitality sector, including Alastair Storey (of Baxter Storey), Lydia Forte (of Rocco Forte Hotels), Knut Wylde (of The Maybourne Group), and Thomas Kochs (of the Corinthia Hotel).

Individuals interested in participating can begin submitting their applications today, with the deadline set for October 3. The competition will progress through quarter and semi-finals, culminating in the grand final at the Corinthia London on January 15 next year. An awards ceremony will follow on February 5 at Claridge’s.

Edward Griffiths, trustee and chairman of judges, expressed enthusiasm for the competition, highlighting the opportunity it offers young front-of-house professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge while paving the way for the next generation of hospitality talent.
