Georgia Bulldogs running back Dante Dowdell has been hospitalized after suffering serious injuries in an ATV accident during the team’s break, leaving his football future uncertain.
Head coach Kirby Smart confirmed Tuesday that the senior tailback will be unavailable indefinitely as he continues his recovery.
The coach said the program is supporting Dowdell and his family during what he described as a difficult situation.
“We are praying for him,” Smart told reporters while addressing the injury update.
Medical Details Remain Limited as Dowdell Receives Specialized Care
While Smart initially declined to provide specific information about the nature of Dowdell’s injuries, reports later revealed that the Georgia running back is receiving treatment at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility known for specializing in rehabilitation for spinal cord and brain injuries.
Smart explained that the accident occurred away from campus while Dowdell was at home during a scheduled break from team activities.
“The Dante Dowdell situation is tough,” Smart said.
“I don’t know when he’ll be back. He had an off-campus accident back home during our break.”
The coach added that the injury involved a recreational vehicle and that Dowdell sustained serious injuries, though the team remains hopeful about his recovery.

Smart said Dowdell has moved beyond the most critical stage of his condition but acknowledged that there are still unanswered questions regarding when he will be able to return to football.
“He’s out of the really tough range,” Smart said.
“But as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don’t know what that looks like in terms of this year.”
The Georgia coach emphasized that the priority remains Dowdell’s long-term health rather than his availability on the field.
“We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we’re waiting to see,” Smart said.
Teammates Rally Around Running Back During Recovery
Dowdell’s teammates have already visited him as he continues treatment, with Smart praising the support surrounding the young player.
“He’s just a tremendous kid [with a] great family,” Smart told ESPN.
“We’re very supportive of them. Our players have been up there to see him. It’s a really tough deal.”
The Bulldogs program has continued to stand behind Dowdell as he focuses on rehabilitation and recovery.
