Gauteng Premier David Makhura has lauded renowned South African poet and author Don Mattera’s contribution not only to South African arts but also to the liberation struggle

Don Mattera, a renowned and iconic playwright and poet from South Africa, has been praised for his contributions to both the liberation fight and the country’s arts by Gauteng Premier David Makhura.

A political and social activist named Mattera passed away on Monday.

“Dr. Don Mattera’s demise is another chapter of loss in our country’s farewell to a generation of brilliant South Africans who left us a free South Africa.

We will remember him as a well-known poet from South Africa, a community activist, a former journalist, and a musician with a remarkable life narrative.

He was a well-known figure, Makhura claimed.

To Mattera’s loved ones, the Premier expressed his sympathies.

“We grieve deeply with his family, close friends, and comrades at this time.

However, we must honour his life and the contribution he made to literature’s role in nation-building and social harmony, he insisted.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Jenny Jeftha, the chairperson of the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation, stated that Mattera was buried on Monday night in accordance with Muslim customs.

“The literary and artistic community has lost an icon. Don’s passing will leave a loss in the world of literature, not just here at home.

Dr. Mattera’s arrival and the unveiling of the star at the entrance of The Joburg Theatre, which celebrated 60 years this past weekend, were still being celebrated when he passed away, Jeftha said.

After consulting with the family, the foundation promised to “reveal as soon as possible” when the orator will have a public memorial service.
