After 15 harrowing months in captivity, four young Israeli soldiers—Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, Karina Ariev, and Liri Albag—have finally been released by Hamas.
The soldiers, aged 19 and 20, were taken during their service at a surveillance post near Gaza in October 2023.
Their release marks a critical step in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, bringing relief to their families and the Israeli public.
Emotional Scenes on Both Sides of the Border
In Gaza City, Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants staged a public event, complete with banners proclaiming “Zionism will not prevail.”
Crowds gathered to watch as the young women, visibly relieved, were handed over to representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Meanwhile, in Israel, hundreds of people gathered to watch a livestream of the moment their loved ones crossed the border to safety, cheering and celebrating their return.
A Fragile Ceasefire Agreement
The release of the four soldiers is part of a delicate ceasefire agreement, which involves a complex prisoner exchange.
Hamas has committed to freeing 200 Palestinian prisoners, including 120 serving life sentences.
However, tensions remain high, as Israeli officials accuse Hamas of violating the terms of the deal by withholding details about other hostages, including civilians and children, who remain in captivity.
Families Torn by Uncertainty
While the release of the soldiers brings joy, the separation of hostages has left families devastated.
One soldier, Agam Berger, 20, was notably excluded from the release, a decision that her cousin, Ashley Waxman Bakshi, described as “psychological warfare.”
Agam’s mother, Meirav, has been leading prayers in Tel Aviv, vowing that the land will not rest until all the hostages are safely home.
A Painful Wait for Answers
The agreement stipulates that Hamas must inform Israeli authorities 24 hours in advance about the identities of hostages set to be released.
However, delays and a lack of transparency have left families in agony, unsure whether their loved ones are alive or when they might return.
Comparisons have been drawn to some of the darkest chapters in Jewish history, with families forced to endure a torturous wait for news.
A Ray of Hope Amid the Shadows
As negotiations continue, it is hoped that Agam Berger and others will be included in future exchanges.
For now, the safe return of Daniella, Naama, Karina, and Liri serves as a beacon of hope in a deeply fraught situation.
Their release is a poignant reminder of the resilience of families and communities in the face of unimaginable hardship.
