Former Springbok Sevens Captain Phillip Snyman Named Permanent Head Coach of Blitzboks Following Successful Interim Tenure in South Africa

In a recent update from SA Rugby, former Springbok Sevens captain Phillip Snyman has been officially named the head coach of the Blitzboks.

This follows his stint as interim coach over the past six months, a period during which he managed to turn the team’s fortunes around significantly.

Snyman’s Impact as Interim Coach

Phillip Snyman stepped into the role of interim coach back in March after a tough run of results in the HSBC Sevens World Series.

Under his leadership, the Blitzboks achieved a major milestone by winning the World Rugby Sevens Repechage tournament in Monaco.

This victory secured their spot in the Paris Olympic Games, where they went on to clinch a bronze medal.

SA Rugby’s High-Performance Restructuring

Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, shared that Snyman’s new role as head coach, which will extend until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, is part of the governing body’s broader high-performance restructuring initiative.

Oberholzer praised Snyman’s ability to swiftly improve the team’s performance, highlighting his remarkable turnaround in Monaco and Paris.

Snyman’s Extensive Experience

As a former captain, Snyman brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Having played in 62 World Series events, two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments, and a Commonwealth Games where the team won gold, he is deeply familiar with the Springbok Sevens.

Notably, he is the only person to have earned Olympic medals as both a player and a coach.

Snyman’s Vision for the Future

In response to his new appointment, Snyman expressed his gratitude to SA Rugby and his excitement about the role.

He acknowledged that while recent results have been promising, there is still much work to be done.

Snyman is determined to elevate the team to a top-three position and is eager to start strengthening the squad to regularly compete for titles and medals.

Overall, Snyman’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Blitzboks, with a focus on building a strong team and achieving continued success on the world stage.
