In an exciting development for fans of South African football, former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sammy Seabi appears to be on the verge of making a return to Polokwane City FC.
After a challenging stint with Sundowns, Seabi is reportedly in advanced discussions to rejoin the club on a free transfer for the upcoming 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
A Journey of Challenges at Sundowns
Seabi’s journey at Mamelodi Sundowns has been a rollercoaster ride.
He made the switch from Polokwane City to Sundowns back in 2019, during the tenure of then-coach Pitso Mosimane.
Unfortunately, breaking into the starting lineup proved to be a tall order due to the intense competition among Sundowns’ talented roster.
To gain essential playing time, Seabi found himself loaned out to several clubs, including Chippa United, Moroka Swallows, and Sekhukhune United, where he hoped to hone his skills.
During the 2023/24 season, Seabi returned to Sundowns with high hopes of securing a regular starting position under coach Rulani Mokwena.
However, he once again faced stiff competition from well-established midfielders such as Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Rivaldo Coetzee, Sphelele Mkhulise, Bongani Zungu, and Marcelo Allende.
His time on the field was limited, with only four appearances throughout the season, which saw Sundowns clinch their seventh consecutive league title and their inaugural African Football League (AFL) championship.
Training with Polokwane City
After parting ways with Sundowns, Seabi has caught the attention of several clubs in the Betway Premiership, including Magesi FC and Chippa United.
However, it seems that Polokwane City is making the strongest move to secure his signature.
Sources close to the club have confirmed that Seabi is currently training with Polokwane City, where he’s received a warm welcome back.
A club insider shared, “Sammy Seabi is training with Polokwane City as we speak, and the club is happy with him because he’s a familiar face here.
I can tell you that he’s going to be signed in the coming days, and he’ll be working with the team during the upcoming FIFA international break to ensure he’s ready to compete again.”
What Lies Ahead for Seabi and Polokwane City?
With Polokwane City keen on finalizing the deal, it looks like Seabi will play a vital role for the team as they aim to replicate their impressive performance from last season, which saw them finish in the top eight of the league standings.
As fans eagerly await confirmation of his signing, it’s clear that Seabi’s return could be a significant boost for Rise and Shine.
