Former Kaizer Chiefs star criticises club’s decision to sign Orlando Pirates defenders Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane in Johannesburg

With the new season around the corner, Kaizer Chiefs are making big moves in the transfer market.

The club, affectionately known as Amakhosi, is preparing for a busy campaign as they gear up to compete both in the Betway Premiership and on the continental stage in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Naturally, fans have been buzzing over the incoming players.

But not everyone’s convinced the club is on the right track—especially when it comes to two of the newly linked names.

Pirates Defenders Switch Sides—But Not Everyone’s Impressed

Two former Orlando Pirates defenders, Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane, are reportedly heading to Naturena.

On paper, it sounds like a decent addition—both players have top-flight experience and came through a big system.

But Junior Khanye, a former Chiefs winger and now a well-known football analyst and YouTuber, isn’t sold on the idea.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Khanye admitted he was taken aback by Monyane’s release from Pirates, especially given the time and development investment the club made in him.

Khanye Questions the Logic Behind the Transfers

Khanye didn’t hold back his thoughts on the matter.

“I was shocked when I heard Monyane was let go,” he said.

“Pirates put so much into his growth, and to release him just like that? It doesn’t make sense.”

He even drew a comparison with another player, Thabiso Lebitso, who played only a few games before getting injured—yet Pirates kept him around.

“It’s like sending your child to school, paying all the fees, then when they graduate and struggle to find work, you give up on them. That’s what this feels like,” Khanye added.

Percy Tau Back in South Africa, But Chiefs Not the Right Fit?

Meanwhile, another name is floating around in transfer talks—Percy Tau.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly star is back home after leaving Qatar SC in May.

With only 10 appearances and four assists during his stint in the Qatar Stars League, Tau’s time abroad ended quietly.

Still, with Kaizer Chiefs on the hunt for experienced attackers, some have suggested Tau could be the game-changer they need. But not everyone agrees.

Mphela Thinks Chiefs Should Think Twice About Tau

Katlego Mphela, another ex-Chiefs striker, thinks the club needs to be careful.

While he admits Tau is a high-calibre player who’s seen success on the continental and international stage, he doubts whether Chiefs would be the right environment.

“Just look at the track record,” Mphela said. “Many of us who came from Sundowns to Chiefs didn’t meet expectations.

There’s always pressure, and not every player copes with that.”

Mphela believes the club needs reinforcements, yes—but not necessarily in the form of Percy Tau.

Should Chiefs Make the Call on Percy Tau?

It’s the big question now hanging over the Chiefs’ fanbase—should they go for Percy Tau or not? Some say he could inspire a turnaround.

Others, like Mphela, fear it could repeat history.

The club is clearly making bold moves this offseason, but whether these signings will push them closer to success or raise more questions remains to be seen.
