This past Sunday, the New York Jets experienced a crushing defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos, leaving fans scratching their heads.
A former Jets quarterback, Boomer Esiason, has raised eyebrows by suggesting there’s a troubling rift between star quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Robert Saleh.
After a strong showing against the New England Patriots just a week earlier, the Jets fell flat, losing 10-9 and failing to find the end zone in front of their home crowd.
Esiason, who played for the Jets from 1993 to 1995, voiced concerns on his WFAN radio show, indicating that there’s a significant problem brewing between the two key figures on the team.
Esiason’s Observations
Esiason expressed his thoughts by highlighting the lack of visible communication between Rodgers and Saleh during the game.
He noted, “I try to watch to see if I see any interactions on the sideline or anything—nothing, nothing. I see a guy walking right past another guy.”
Reflecting on his own experiences with coaches, he said, “I had those days with two coaches in particular, and it’s because I didn’t trust the guy, and I didn’t like the guy.”
He then compared his own past frustrations to what he perceives in Rodgers, emphasizing that it’s clear something isn’t right between the quarterback and coach.
Tension After the Game
Esiason’s concerns gained traction after a somewhat awkward exchange during the postgame press conference.
When Saleh questioned whether the Jets were “good enough” to handle their current pre-snap cadence—especially after five false starts against Denver—Rodgers seemed to take offense.
“That’s one way to do it. The other way is to hold them accountable,” he remarked, suggesting that the team hadn’t faced such issues until recently.
Additionally, there was a moment during the game against the Patriots where Rodgers and Saleh had a tense sideline interaction.
After the Jets took the lead, Rodgers lightly shoved Saleh, leading many fans to speculate that he was signaling it was “too early” for the coach to celebrate.
However, Rodgers later downplayed the incident, stating, “It wasn’t awkward at all,” and clarified that he was actually referencing a “two-score lead,” which is a phrase Saleh often uses.
The Coach’s Struggles and Looking Ahead
Despite the optimism surrounding the team earlier in the season, questions about Saleh’s leadership loom large.
His record stands at a disappointing 20-35 since taking over in New York, and the recent struggles haven’t done him any favors.
On the other hand, Rodgers, a ten-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, continues to be a significant asset for the team as they aim to recover from this setback.
Looking ahead, the Jets are gearing up for a critical matchup against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings this weekend.
Fans will be hoping for a better performance and a more cohesive dynamic between their star quarterback and head coach.
