The Cal Poly community is mourning the sudden loss of one of its brightest stars, Shelby Daniele, a former track and field standout.
At just 23, Shelby passed away from a brain aneurysm, leaving behind a legacy that touched not only her teammates but the entire university.
A Record-Breaking Athlete and Scholar
Shelby Daniele wasn’t just any athlete.
She shattered records during her time at Cal Poly, including setting a new indoor 200m record with a time of 24.69 seconds.
Her dedication on the track was matched by her achievements in the classroom, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 2023 and went on to receive her master’s degree with distinction just a few months before her passing.
A Teammate’s Tribute
Shelby’s influence extended beyond her athletic performance.
Brian Brandenburg, father of fellow track athlete Eva, paid tribute to Shelby in an emotional social media post.
He recalled how Shelby’s encouragement was instrumental in his daughter’s decision to join the Cal Poly track team.
“Shelby Daniele, the young lady who inspired Eva to run track at Cal Poly, passed away from a brain aneurysm.
It’s completely heartbreaking. Hug your children and tell them you love them every day.”
An Exceptional Student-Athlete
The university released a heartfelt statement following Shelby’s passing, acknowledging her remarkable contributions as both a student and an athlete.
“Shelby was an exceptional student-athlete who left an indelible mark on our community.
She was a six-time All-Big West honoree, two-time Big West champion, and team captain.
But beyond the accolades, Shelby was an incredible teammate and leader.
Her heart, compassion, and drive will never be forgotten.”
A Sister’s Heartfelt Goodbye
Shelby’s sister, Jessica Reichman, shared her grief on Instagram, posting a moving tribute that captured the profound loss her family feels.
“My worst nightmare happened. My sister, my best friend, left Earth to be with God.
Too soon, too fast. I’ll never understand why, but I know she’s where she’s supposed to be.
I wish we could’ve lived the rest of our lives together.
You were the light in everyone’s life, and I will love you forever, baby girl.”
A Lasting Legacy
In her five years at Cal Poly, Shelby’s achievements on the track were nothing short of extraordinary.
In addition to her 200m record, she also held the second-fastest time in the indoor 60m and 100m events.
However, her impact went beyond records and titles.
Her teammates, coaches, and the university community will remember her as a role model and leader whose kindness and passion inspired everyone she met.
Shelby Daniele’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the entire Cal Poly community, forever a reminder of the extraordinary life she led.
