Sir Mark Thompson, who was just named the new CEO of the US media behemoth, has expressed his commitment to creating a “successful future for CNN.”

The media mogul worked as the BBC’s director-general from 2004 until 2012. After that, he left to become the New York Times’ chief executive, a position he would hold until 2020.

In the King’s Birthday Honours in June 2023, he received a knighthood for his work in the media.

In a “time of huge disruption and transformation,” CNN’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Wednesday that Sir Mark would take over as chair and CEO of CNN Worldwide.

Chris Licht, who assumed the position in May 2022 and left it effective immediately in June, will be replaced by him.

According to Warner Bros. Discovery, Sir Mark will serve as CNN’s editor-in-chief, overseeing the content of the company’s “global portfolio of networks, channels, and programming” as well as its 4,000 staff members across the world.

As the director-general of the BBC, Sir Mark oversaw one of the biggest newsrooms in the world during the 2008 financial crisis and the London Olympics in 2012. He also oversaw the expansion of web and smartphone services and the creation of the BBC iPlayer.

He oversaw the New York Times’ shift to a service that is primarily available online and has a sizable subscriber base.
