Former Bayelsa State Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri, Passes Away at 65

Justice Kate Abiri, the immediate past chief judge of Bayelsa State, has sadly passed away at the age of 65.

The news of her demise was confirmed in a statement issued by the Chief Registrar at the State Judiciary Headquarters, High Court, Amaebi Orukari, in Yenagoa.

Justice Abiri’s Passing

Justice Abiri’s death was reported on Thursday, following a brief illness.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Hon. Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye.

The sad event occurred on August 3, 2023, and Justice Abiri passed away at the Glory Land Hospital in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

At the time of her death, she held the position of the immediate past Chief Judge of Bayelsa State.

Details regarding the funeral arrangements for Justice Abiri will be shared after consultation with her family, according to the statement released by Amaebi Orukari.

Justice Abiri’s Career and Retirement

Before her passing, Justice Kate Abiri had a distinguished career in the state judiciary.

She served as the chief judge for 15 years, having been appointed to the position in 2008 by former Governor Timipre Sylva.

Her appointment followed a demand by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa branch, which advocated for her selection based on the recommendation by the National Judicial Commission (NJC).

On January 13, 2023, Justice Abiri retired from her role as chief judge, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 after a remarkable tenure.
