Former baseball star Matt Bush, who was once the No. 1 overall pick, has found himself in hot water once again.
The 38-year-old was arrested on Sunday evening in Texas on DWI charges after allegedly attempting to escape the scene of a multi-vehicle crash.
This latest incident has reignited discussions about his tumultuous history, which has been marred by numerous legal troubles over the years.
The Incident Unfolds
On that fateful Sunday, Bush was driving his 2023 Lincoln Aviator when an Arlington police officer attempted to pull him over for erratic driving.
Instead of complying, Bush sped away, leading the police to issue a public ‘Be On The Lookout’ alert shortly after 8:30 PM.
Just minutes later, reports of a multi-vehicle collision at a nearby intersection flooded in.
When the police arrived, they found Bush restrained by a group of bystanders.
According to the police report, Bush ran a red light, colliding with a 2023 Chevy Silverado before crashing into two more vehicles—a 2010 GMC Yukon and a 2008 Toyota Corolla.
After the crash, he attempted to flee but was intercepted by members of the public who held him until the police arrived.
Hospital Visit and Suspicions
Following the collision, both Bush and the 41-year-old driver of the Silverado were taken to the hospital.
Police suspected that Bush might be intoxicated, yet he refused to take a field sobriety test and declined to answer questions from investigators about the incident.
His behavior during this latest episode raises concerns, especially considering his troubled history.
A Checkered History
Bush’s path to the major leagues has been fraught with issues, beginning just weeks after being drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2004.
He faced his first arrest for felony assault after an altercation at a bar.
His reckless behavior continued in 2009 when he assaulted a young lacrosse player with a golf club at a San Diego high school, shouting, “I’m Matt f***ing Bush.”
After a brief stint with the Toronto Blue Jays, Bush was released for violating a zero-tolerance policy after attacking a woman at a party in Florida.
In 2012, while with the Tampa Bay Rays, he was involved in a serious incident where he hit a motorcyclist and left the scene.
The motorcyclist survived only because he was wearing a helmet.
Bush spent time in jail for various charges stemming from that incident and ultimately served 51 months in prison.
A Surprise Comeback
In a surprising twist, just two months after his release from prison, Bush signed a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers, again subject to a zero-tolerance policy.
He made a comeback to Major League Baseball in May 2016, even earning his first-ever MLB win against the Toronto Blue Jays that month.
However, his return to the field has been plagued by injuries, including multiple Tommy John surgeries.
In 2023, Bush made headlines with his unexpected return to the Rangers, contributing to their World Series-winning roster, although he did not play in any games during that championship run.
Now, at 38 years old and currently out of contract, fans and commentators alike are left wondering what the future holds for him.
What Lies Ahead?
As Matt Bush’s story unfolds, it raises questions about redemption and accountability.
With a past filled with troubling choices and a recent DWI arrest, many are left pondering whether he can turn his life around once more.
Will he find a way to reclaim his career, or is this the final chapter in a tumultuous journey?
The next steps in his life and career remain uncertain, leaving fans and critics alike eager to see what comes next for this once-promising talent.
