Filmmaker Caroline Giuliani Discusses the Emotional Toll of Her Father’s Relationship with Donald Trump and Calls for Support of Kamala Harris in an Open Letter

In a recent essay for Vanity Fair, Caroline Giuliani, daughter of the former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, shared her heartfelt support for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Caroline didn’t hold back, expressing her profound grief over what she perceives as a loss of her father to Donald Trump.

A Personal Loss

Caroline, a filmmaker at 35, opened up about the emotional turmoil she’s experienced since her father aligned himself with Trump.

“I’ve been grieving the loss of my dad to Trump,” she wrote.

“I cannot bear to lose our country to him too.”

Her journey of sorrow began in 2018 when Rudy informed her of his decision to become Trump’s lawyer, a moment that left her in tears.

“It has been extraordinarily painful watching my dad’s life crumble since he joined forces with Trump,” Caroline reflected.

She believes that Trump’s presidency marked a significant downturn not just for her father, but for their family and the nation as a whole.

“Trump being the president was the worst thing that ever happened to my dad, to my family, and to our nation’s modern history,” she stated emphatically.

Family Ties and Changes

Caroline’s mother, Donna Hanover, was married to Rudy Giuliani during his mayoral tenure, and Caroline has memories dating back to when she was just four years old, living in the iconic Gracie Mansion.

A photograph from her father’s 1994 inauguration captures a tender moment of her as a child, dressed in a pink coat and lovingly cupping her dad’s face.

After her parents’ divorce in 2000, she and her mother continued to reside at Gracie Mansion until Rudy’s term ended, after which they moved to East Manhattan.

Interestingly, her brother Andrew also had ties to Trump.

A Fall from Grace

Rudy Giuliani’s transformation from “America’s Mayor” after the September 11 attacks to his current state is a stark contrast.

Once celebrated for his leadership during a crisis, he now faces significant legal troubles.

He lost his law license in both Washington D.C. and New York and has been embroiled in controversies surrounding false claims about the 2020 election.

His actions have led to serious repercussions, including an indictment in Arizona and a $148 million judgment against him for defaming two Georgia election workers.

Complicated Emotions

Despite the estrangement between Caroline and her father, she makes it clear that her love for him remains intact.

“My dad and I have a cartoonishly complicated relationship,” she acknowledges, “but he is still my father, and despite his faults, I love him.”

Caroline reflects on their shared history, acknowledging the highs and lows they’ve both experienced.

She notes that the emotional weight of writing about these issues is immense, especially considering how fleeting life can be.

“The totality of that makes this the most difficult piece I’ve ever written,” she admitted.

“Yet this moment and this election are so much bigger than any of us.”

Concerns for the Future

In her essay, Caroline, who previously supported Joe Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016, voiced her apprehensions about Trump potentially regaining the presidency and what that could mean for the future of the nation, particularly regarding abortion rights.

She believes a Trump presidency with unchecked power would be dangerous.

Caroline expressed her admiration for Kamala Harris, stating, “She has the experience, intelligence, and fortitude to lead us to a brighter future.”

She emphasized the importance of accountability, noting how Harris held Trump accountable during debates.

A Warning to Others

In a powerful closing, Caroline warns, “Take it from me, Trump destroys everything he touches. I saw it happen to my family. Don’t let it happen to yours, or to our country.”

Her passionate plea is not just about her personal experiences but reflects a broader concern for the future of the nation and its values.
