Images recently released by the FBI shed light on the chilling events of the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, which saw 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar kill 14 people.
New photos depict the crude homemade explosives he left on Bourbon Street before carrying out the deadly rampage.
The Explosives and Their Failed Detonation
The FBI has shared pictures of the improvised weapons Jabbar attempted to use.
Authorities believe he tried but failed to detonate the devices placed in large coolers just before he drove a rented truck into the crowd.
Surveillance footage shows Jabbar positioning the coolers, which contained steel pipes, nails, and a radio-controlled receiver.
These bombs were later rendered safe at the scene by authorities.
The Attack and Its Aftermath
Jabbar’s attack resulted in 14 fatalities, including his own death.
He was shot by police after a violent exchange following the truck crash.
At least 35 people were injured in the incident. Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, had expressed support for ISIS on Facebook shortly before the attack.
Evidence Found at Multiple Locations
Further investigation uncovered bomb-making materials at multiple locations tied to Jabbar.
The FBI revealed that his Houston home contained hazardous materials and a workbench used to assemble explosives.
Additionally, he had rented an electric truck and had made two trips to New Orleans prior to the attack.
The Attacker’s Movements Before the Attack
Surveillance footage also captured Jabbar stopping at gun stores and purchasing the cooler he would use to store the explosives.
Just hours before the attack, he bought a cooler in Vidor, Texas, and gun oil in Sulphur, Louisiana.
The Violent Encounter with Police
After crashing the truck, Jabbar exited wearing a ballistic vest and helmet, firing at police and injuring at least two officers before he was killed in the exchange.
The number of shots fired and whether any bystanders were hit is still part of the ongoing investigation.
The Victims of the Attack
The victims, ranging in age from 18 to 63, came from various states across the U.S., as well as the United Kingdom.
Most of the victims were in their 20s, and the coroner confirmed they all died from blunt force injuries.
This attack has been officially labeled an act of terrorism by the FBI.
