The FBI has apprehended an Afghan man who allegedly sought to carry out an attack on Election Day, inspired by the Islamic State group.
This case has raised significant concerns about domestic terrorism and public safety during a critical time in the U.S.
The Arrest
Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, a 27-year-old resident of Oklahoma City, was arrested on Monday after he revealed to investigators that he intended to execute his plan on Election Day next month.
Alongside a juvenile accomplice, he expressed a willingness to die as martyrs for their cause.
Tawhedi entered the United States in 2021 under a special immigrant visa and had recently been making preparations for the attack, which included acquiring firearms.
Disturbingly, he had liquidated his family’s assets and purchased one-way tickets for his wife and child to return to Afghanistan, signaling his commitment to the violent plan.
FBI’s Commitment to National Security
FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized that combating terrorism remains the agency’s top priority.
He affirmed that the FBI will employ every available resource to safeguard the American public.
After Tawhedi’s arrest, the Justice Department reported that he admitted to targeting large gatherings during the upcoming election, demonstrating the serious nature of his intentions.
Charges and Possible Sentencing
Tawhedi has been charged with conspiring to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, specifically the Islamic State.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years for this charge, alongside an additional 15 years for the unlawful acquisition of firearms intended for a federal crime of terrorism.
The case’s details are still emerging, and it remains unclear whether he has legal representation.
Ongoing Investigations
Attorney General Merrick Garland reiterated the commitment of the Justice Department to disrupt plots like Tawhedi’s.
He highlighted the ongoing threat posed by ISIS and its affiliates to national security, promising continued efforts to identify and prosecute individuals attempting to inflict terror on American soil.
How It Unfolded
According to the criminal complaint, Tawhedi came to the attention of the FBI after attempting to sell personal property online.
An FBI informant posed as a potential buyer, leading to discussions about purchasing assault rifles and ammunition.
This interaction eventually culminated in a meeting where Tawhedi and his accomplice purchased two AK-47 rifles, along with ammunition, before being arrested.
Moving Forward
As this case develops, it raises pressing questions about national security and the measures being taken to prevent potential threats.
The FBI’s actions in disrupting this plot underscore the importance of vigilance in safeguarding public safety, especially during significant events like the upcoming elections.
