It’s not every day that a young player makes such a big splash in their debut season, but that’s exactly what Mbekezeli Mbokazi has done.
The Orlando Pirates teen sensation is quickly turning heads, not just in South Africa, but across the continent.
Now, one of Africa’s most successful clubs is keeping a very close eye on him.
Egyptian Giants Set Sights on Mbokazi
According to reports, Al Ahly, Egypt’s football powerhouse, are seriously considering a move for the promising teenage defender.
They’re preparing for a major push to win back their CAF Champions League title and want to strengthen their squad ahead of the Club World Cup.
And it looks like Mbokazi is firmly on their radar.
An Egyptian outlet, Sport El Watan, revealed that Al Ahly officials are already doing their homework, hoping to secure Mbokazi during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Even more interesting? They’re eyeing the FIFA exceptional registration period starting in June to fast-track the move.
Pirates’ Talents Shine Beyond the League
Mbokazi isn’t the only Pirate making waves. In fact, Orlando Pirates have a strong presence in the recent Bafana Bafana call-up list, showing just how rich the squad is in local talent.
Players like Sipho Chaine, Evidence Makgopa, and Patrick Maswanganyi are among the 11 club representatives called up to don the national jersey.
That’s a significant chunk of the national team coming from one club!
Also in the spotlight is Makhehlene Makhaula, whose hard work in midfield hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Hlompho Kekana, a legend of the game, even gave him a shoutout on SABC Sport’s Soccer Zone, naming him his Player of the Season.
Should Pirates Let Mbokazi Go?
Now the big question: Should Orlando Pirates sell Mbokazi while his stock is high? There’s no doubt the interest from a club like Al Ahly is flattering, but the Pirates faithful may feel it’s too soon to lose such a promising young player.
Then again, a move to a club of Al Ahly’s caliber could fast-track his career in ways staying local might not.
It’s a decision the club—and Mbokazi himself—will have to weigh carefully.
