An Eastern Cape police officer allegedly shot his wife before fatally shooting himself with his service pistol at their home in Ikamvelihle on Monday morning.
The 49-year-old officer, who was stationed at KwaZakhele police station, allegedly opened fire on his wife at their residence on Bumbane Street, NU 4A, at about 7am.
The woman survived the shooting and was taken to hospital with three gunshot wounds.
Two Children Were Inside the House
Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that two children were inside the house when the shooting occurred. Neither child was injured.
Police said the firearm involved was the officer’s service pistol.
Authorities have opened an attempted murder case relating to the shooting of the woman, as well as an inquest docket concerning the officer’s death.
Police have not released further details, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Offers Support to Family
Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Vuyisile Ncata described the incident as deeply distressing and said counselling and other support would be made available to those affected.
“Our thoughts are with the injured wife as she recovers, with the two children who were in the house, and with the family,” Ncata said.
He acknowledged the trauma such incidents can cause and urged police officers and their families experiencing emotional distress or domestic conflict to seek assistance.
Police Urge Officers and Families to Seek Help
Ncata encouraged anyone experiencing emotional difficulties or domestic conflict to contact SAPS wellness services, a trusted colleague or a professional counsellor.
“If you are experiencing emotional distress, domestic conflict or any situation that feels beyond your control, please reach out for help through SAPS wellness services, a trusted colleague or a professional counsellor,” he said.
“Seeking help is a sign of strength and support is available.”
The investigation into the shooting continues.
