Lekau Sehoana is one of South Africa’s most successful businesspeople.
And what makes his success story even sweeter is the fact that he started at the bottom and worked his way up.
On his Twitter account this week, the founder of Drip Footwear recounted his “rags to riches” narrative with his followers.
He described himself as a “hopeless drinker” with no direction.
Despite attending all the biggest celebrity events and parties in Mzansi, Lekau Sehoana lives a sober lifestyle.
But this was not always the case. Before the success of Drip Footwear, the businessman was an ordinary South African who struggled to make ends meet.
He also regularly abused alcohol.
The shoe designer shared on Twitter: “A lot of people ask me why I don’t drink alcohol, I used to. A lot even”
Lekau Sehoana attached pictures of his younger blacked out after drinking too much.
He added: “This is a picture of me at 21 years of age. Drunkard, poverty stricken and hopeless. But a lover of fashion and the pop-culture. I was able to turn my life around”.
He continued his story: “After Matric, I was forced to go and hustle. The hustle didn’t go well, then I went back to school, so I could fund the hustle. I studied NQF Level 4 Civil Engineering, got a Job, bought a Mini [Cooper] and forgot the hustle. Worst mistake ever. I didn’t need a car”.
Things went well for a bit, before falling apart completely. Lekau Sehoana revealed that he found himself drowning in debt after losing his job.
“The company made a license for me, gave me a [Nissan van] NP200. I had a petrol card and I could drive it anywhere. I didn’t earn that well, but I chose to park their car and bought myself one. When I lost my Job, that was a big problem… imagine losing a car and having to walk eKasi and debt”
Fast forward a few years and Lekau Sehoana is now a celebrated businesman producing proudly South African merchandise
He tweeted his latest accomplishment; “A brand we built during a pandemic, 1 Drip at a time. Our 20th store, revealing the location in a few days”.
