In a shocking turn of events in France, Dominique Pelicot, 71, has been at the center of a high-profile trial for allegedly drugging his wife and inviting numerous men to sexually assault her over a decade.
During the trial, Pelicot claimed that his wife was at fault for his actions because she refused to engage in swinging with him.
This startling defense was revealed through the testimony of criminal psychologist Annabelle Montagne.
Montagne recounted her December 2020 interview with Pelicot, where he admitted to orchestrating the abuse against his wife, Gisele.
Pelicot reportedly said, “My wife and I discussed swinging, but she didn’t agree, so I drugged her.”
Despite his professed love for Gisele, Montagne noted that Pelicot viewed her more as an object to fulfill his sexual desires rather than as a partner he truly loved.
A Troubling Psychological Profile
Further insight into Pelicot’s mental state was provided by another prison psychologist who testified that Pelicot exhibited traits of a split personality and lacked empathy.
She explained that he had inherited his father’s violent temperament and revealed that Pelicot would have continued his abuse if he hadn’t been caught.
He even expressed resentment towards the criminal charges, claiming they had ruined his life.
Psychologist Marianne Douteau elaborated on Pelicot’s troubled upbringing.
In a February 2021 interview, Pelicot disclosed being sexually abused by a nurse at age nine.
His father, Denis, was reportedly a violent abuser who exploited Pelicot’s labor from a young age and took most of his earnings.
This harsh environment seemingly shaped Pelicot into a person who is angry, stubborn, and manipulative.
The Unveiling of a Dark Past
Douteau also noted that Pelicot’s troubled personality was reflected in his sexual behavior.
He admitted to being highly demanding and frequently sought out sexual encounters online.
His wife was isolated from her support network after the couple moved to the south of France in 2013, which coincided with the intensification of Pelicot’s abuse.
Pelicot’s relationship with Gisele began when they were both 18, and they married two years later.
Despite a period of happiness, both had extramarital affairs.
Pelicot worked as an electrician before transitioning to a real estate career, but financial difficulties led to a 2004 divorce.
The couple later remarried in 2007, but their marriage was marred by ongoing issues.
Family Testimonies and the Trial’s Impact
The trial has also brought heart-wrenching testimonies from Pelicot’s family.
His sons, David and Florian, painted a picture of a man who was deceitful and violent.
The trial, held in Avignon, has shocked many, especially as details emerged of Pelicot’s heinous acts over the years.
Gisele, now 72, recounted the horror of discovering she had been drugged and raped by multiple men while Pelicot filmed the abuse for his pleasure.
Her daughter, Caroline Peyronnet, described the devastation she felt upon learning of her father’s crimes, which were further compounded by the discovery of disturbing photographs of her in compromising positions.
The Discovery and Legal Proceedings
The abuse came to light after Pelicot was arrested for taking inappropriate photos in a supermarket.
A search of his computer revealed a staggering 20,000 homemade films and photos of the abuse.
Investigators identified 50 men from the 84 Pelicot had met online and invited to his home.
The men, aged between 26 and 73, included a diverse range of professionals.
The trial has seen some of the accused admitting guilt, while others deny it, with one claiming the acts were consensual.
Pelicot faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, while the other men face varying sentences.
The trial, which is set to continue until December, has captivated and horrified many, shedding light on a deeply disturbing case of abuse and manipulation.
