On Sunday, the Office of the Deputy President addressed concerns regarding Paul Mashatile’s sudden collapse during the N’wamitwa Day Celebrations in Tzaneen, Limpopo.
Earlier speculations suggested food poisoning, but the office clarified that dehydration from excessive heat was the actual cause, as reported by Jacaranda FM News.
Doctor’s Report Clears Up Misconceptions
Paul Mashatile had previously mentioned the possibility of food poisoning in a speech at Tshwane University of Technology just before his collapse.
However, Keith Khoza, the acting spokesperson, clarified that the medical evaluation showed no signs of poisoning.
“The doctor who examined the deputy president did not mention food poisoning at all,” Khoza explained.
“The collapse was due to dehydration caused by extreme heat.”
Khoza reassured the public that Mashatile is in good health, stating, “He is fine. After a thorough medical check, he is back to his usual self.”
The Presidency also praised the Presidential Protection Service and the Presidential Medical Unit for their swift response.
Public Support Appreciated
The Deputy President’s office expressed gratitude to South Africans for their concern and support.
“The Deputy President extends his thanks to all South Africans for their support and prayers,” said a statement from the Presidency.
Mashatile’s health scare has sparked a broader discussion on the importance of staying hydrated during public events, especially in harsh weather conditions.
Highlighting N’wamitwa Day’s Significance
During his speech at the N’wamitwa Day event, Mashatile emphasized the importance of the 16th anniversary of the celebration.
He celebrated the occasion as a symbol of national unity and progress, particularly in advancing gender equality.
“Her Royal Highness Hosi Dr N’wamitwa II’s rise to the throne represents resilience and progress in our country’s efforts to empower women in leadership roles,” Mashatile remarked.
Mashatile also addressed the need to challenge patriarchy and promote gender equality.
“We must confront patriarchy and work together as government and traditional leaders to eliminate persistent inequalities and Gender-Based Violence (GBV),” he urged.
What’s Next?
As Mashatile recovers, the focus will likely remain on the issues he highlighted during his speech, including the ongoing fight against gender-based violence and the promotion of gender equality in South Africa.
