Controversy Erupts as DJ Maphorisa Claims to Have Created Amapiano, Leading to Sol Phenduka’s Critique and Backlash Over Samthing Soweto’s Song Credit in Durban

Recently, celebrated podcaster and radio host Sol Phenduka made headlines for his response to DJ Maphorisa’s controversial statements about Amapiano.

The Samthing Soweto Controversy

Last week, DJ Maphorisa stirred up a storm on social media after failing to credit Samthing Soweto on the track Amalanga Awafani.

This oversight didn’t go unnoticed, with Samthing Soweto himself expressing his disappointment using a broken heart emoji on the track’s cover.

Fans were quick to criticize DJ Maphorisa for not acknowledging Soweto’s contribution, with some accusing him of exploiting other artists.

The backlash was swift, with several fans even reporting the song on streaming platforms.

In response to the criticism, DJ Maphorisa took to Instagram Live to explain his side of the story.

Sol Phenduka Responds to DJ Maphorisa’s Claims

In his Instagram Live session, DJ Maphorisa not only addressed the Samthing Soweto issue but also made bold statements about his role in the Amapiano genre.

He claimed credit for saving Amapiano and helping various artists, including Kabza De Small, rise to fame.

Phenduka, however, was quick to counter these claims.

On his show Podcast and Chill with MacG, he argued that DJ Maphorisa did not create Amapiano but rather arrived on the scene after it had already started to gain traction.

Phenduka emphasized that Kabza De Small was already producing Amapiano tracks before Maphorisa came into the picture.

Despite his criticism, Phenduka did acknowledge Maphorisa’s impact on the industry, noting that while he didn’t start Amapiano, he played a significant role in popularizing it.

The Origins of Amapiano

The debate over who founded Amapiano continues to be contentious.

Reports suggest that Amapiano began to emerge in South Africa around 2014, though it gained significant popularity only in the following years.

DJ Maphorisa has previously mentioned that Nigerian singer Wizkid introduced him to Amapiano.

During an interview, Maphorisa described the genre as an “underground and instrumental only” sound before it became mainstream.

As the discussion around Amapiano’s origins continues, it’s clear that both DJ Maphorisa and Sol Phenduka have played important roles in shaping the genre’s narrative.
