The Companions of the Order of Malta, a charitable organization with a mission to practice faith and charity, runs the popular Companions Café, which serves hot meals and offers vital companionship to those in need.

Located at St. James’ Catholic Church in the upscale area of Spanish Place, the café has been welcoming guests twice a week for over a decade.

While providing nourishment is a key focus, the café goes far beyond just serving food.

Kate MacKenzie, the London coordinator for the Companions of the Order of Malta, explains that the café is about creating an environment where people can come together, especially after the isolation brought about by the pandemic.

Many of the guests lost their ability to communicate and interact during lockdowns, and the café aims to restore that sense of community.

A Unique Approach to Homelessness

The café operates on a distinct philosophy based on Catholic social teaching, treating each homeless guest as a valued individual rather than just someone in need.

In addition to offering meals, the café provides free clothes, toiletries, and a safe space for guests to relax, socialize, and regain their dignity.

Guests can sit down with friends, listen to music, or even enjoy a good book while eating.

The Role of Volunteers in the Café’s Success

MacKenzie, who was previously a nurse manager, plays an active role in coordinating the volunteers who help run the café.

On a typical evening, more than 30 volunteers are involved in various roles, from preparing meals to greeting guests and organizing donated items like warm clothes.

MacKenzie has become familiar with many of the guests over the years, some of whom have returned after the pandemic, while others have recently found themselves without a home.

The Need for Dignity and Companionship

The café is more than just a place to get a warm meal; it’s a place for guests to reclaim their sense of self-worth.

MacKenzie describes it as a space that provides dignity and companionship over dinner.

She notes that many of the guests live in challenging conditions, with overcrowded and poorly maintained housing that lacks basic amenities like cooking or washing facilities.

The café not only offers a meal but also directs guests to additional services that may assist them in improving their circumstances.

A Memorable Evening with Music and Warm Hospitality

During a recent evening at the café, MacKenzie also added a personal touch by playing a selection of music on a baby grand piano, including pieces by Debussy and Sinatra’s “My Way.”

Meanwhile, guests enjoyed hearty meals like Polish potato and beef stew, with a vegan sausage option available.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with refills of tea and coffee served in mugs adorned with the Maltese cross.

Support from Local Leaders

The café has earned praise from local figures, including Councillor Robert Rigby, the Catholic Lord Mayor of Westminster, who visited the café on January 16, 2025, to help serve meals and engage with guests.

Rigby highlighted the positive impact of the café, which he called an “amazing project” that gives people in difficult circumstances the opportunity to be treated with dignity.

A Chance to Connect with the Community

During his visit, Lord Mayor Rigby had the chance to speak with the café’s guests, addressing their concerns and offering support.

The volunteers and guests were equally pleased to meet with him, and MacKenzie shared that the homeless individuals who frequent the café appreciate the opportunity to connect with local leaders and feel valued in their community.
