Cluster infection breaks out at Taoyuan technology factory

Taipei, April 15 (CNA) A new cluster infection of over 100 migrant workers has been reported at a network security equipment manufacturer in Taoyuan, with the results of over 1,000 others still pending, according to the city’s mayor Friday.

A total of 111 migrant workers and three Taiwanese workers at Senao Networks have tested positive, while another 1,054 people who were tested Thursday and Friday are waiting for the results, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) said at a press conference.

“We actually tested everybody else at the factory using rapid tests and they were all negative, but to be strict, we tested them again using PCR tests,” Cheng said.

The mayor did not make clear if the 1,054 people waiting for test results were all factory workers who also got rapid tests or if other contacts outside the factory were among those tested.

He said earlier in the day that the city has prepared a quarantine hotel with around 130 rooms for mild cases that will be supported by medical services from Min-Sheng General Hospital.

Taoyuan reported 290 new coronavirus cases Friday, just under a quarter of the 1,209 new domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases across Taiwan.

It was the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began more than two years ago that Taiwan had reported more than 1,000 domestic cases in a single day.
