…By Larry John for TDPel Media. Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chief Whip of the Senate, has stated that he will not withdraw from the race for the position of Senate President in the 10th National Assembly.
This comes after the All Progressive Congress (APC) endorsed Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau as their preferred candidates for the positions of Senate President and deputy, respectively.
This decision has caused discontent among other aspirants for the principal positions in the 10th NASS, including Kalu.
In a recent development, it has been reported that Kalu, during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, expressed his determination not to step down for Akpabio.
Instead, he disclosed that he and Abdul’aziz Yari, a former Zamfara governor and another prominent contender for the position, are forming an alliance in response to their grievances about the APC’s zoning arrangement.
Kalu emphasized, “I won’t step down for anybody.
We are talking with former Governor Yari.
Our group and his group are talking, intimate talk and partnership.
We will make sure that no one zone can produce the Senate presidency.”
He further revealed that their united partnership, focused on the best interests of Nigeria, will soon be unveiled by their sponsors.
The Senator highlighted that he and Yari have been engaged in discussions for the past four weeks and the sponsors of their alliance will determine the direction they take.
Kalu expressed his eagerness to share the outcome of these discussions.
He emphasized their shared commitment to the integrity of the Senate, as well as their support for President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who were their former colleagues.
Kalu assured that they would work to prevent a recurrence of the events that transpired during Saraki’s time as Senate President.
The unveiling of the partnership and the decisions made by their sponsors will be awaited with interest in the coming days or weeks.
Kalu remains steadfast in his bid for the Senate President position, while joining forces with Yari to advance their common goals.
