In a surprising turn of events, the former head of engineering at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), Daniel Mthimkhulu, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
This sentencing, handed down on Tuesday, September 3, by the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court, marks a significant moment in a case that has captured widespread attention.
The Case Unfolds
Mthimkhulu, who was previously earning an impressive R2.8 million annually, was found guilty in January 2022.
The charges against him included nine counts of fraud and misrepresentation concerning his qualifications.
It was revealed that his claimed diploma, degree, and doctorate in engineering were all fraudulent.
In addition to his prison term, the Gauteng High Court has ordered Mthimkhulu to repay Prasa a staggering R5.7 million, which he had obtained under false pretenses.
The Fallout
During his tenure, Mthimkhulu was lauded by former Prasa CEO Lucky Montana as a top-notch engineer whose expertise was highly coveted.
This acclaim led to a significant salary increase, from R1.6 million to R2.8 million.
Despite the verdict, Mthimkhulu has consistently maintained his innocence, claiming that his CV was altered by a third party and suggesting that there may be political motives behind the case.
Looking Ahead
As the dust settles on this high-profile case, many are left wondering what the future holds for Prasa and whether there will be further repercussions in the rail sector.
