Chelsea striker Sam Kerr found herself at the center of a courtroom drama after an alcohol-fueled night out took a turn for the worse.
What started as an evening of fun with her fiancée, West Ham footballer Kristie Mewis, ended with a smashed taxi window, a police station visit, and a confrontation with officers.
Taxi Ride Ends at Police Station
The incident unfolded in the early hours of January 30, 2023, when a taxi driver called the police, reporting that a woman in his car was attempting to break the back window.
Following police advice, the driver drove straight to Twickenham Police Station, where officers were waiting outside.
Upon arrival, police saw shattered glass around the vehicle and noticed Kerr trying to climb out of the taxi window alongside Mewis.
The officers, PC Stephen Lovell and PC Samuel Limb, approached the scene to assess the situation.
Claims of Kidnapping and Unpaid Fare
Kerr later explained to officers that she believed they were being kidnapped after the driver refused to take them to her home address.
She claimed she broke the window in an attempt to escape and raise the alarm.
The taxi driver, however, had a different account.
He alleged that one of the women had vomited in his car and refused to pay the fare.
As officers attempted to clarify the situation, Kerr repeatedly interrupted, even going as far as showing PC Lovell her mobile banking app to prove she had the funds to cover any damage.
Heated Exchange with Police
The tension escalated when Kerr allegedly directed offensive remarks at PC Lovell, calling him “f***ing stupid and white.”
This comment was reportedly overheard by other officers and recorded on body-worn cameras.
PC Shane Scott described Kerr as visibly intoxicated, highly emotional, and agitated.
As a result, PC Lovell arrested her on suspicion of criminal damage and racially aggravated public order offenses.
Courtroom Appearance and Career Update
On Monday, Kerr arrived at Kingston Crown Court dressed entirely in black, making a somber entrance before proceedings began.
The 31-year-old has been absent from football since suffering an ACL injury in January of the previous year, though Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor recently suggested she could make a return by February or March.
A key player for Chelsea since joining in 2019, Kerr has been instrumental in multiple WSL, FA Cup, and League Cup victories.
She is also Australia’s all-time leading goal scorer, with 69 goals in 128 appearances for the Matildas.
Legal Battle Continues
In court, the prosecution emphasized that the case was not just about the words Kerr used but their intent and impact on the officers involved.
They also noted that Kerr identifies as white Anglo-Indian, which is relevant to the charge.
Kerr has denied the allegations of racially aggravated abuse.
With the trial still ongoing, the football star’s legal fate remains uncertain.
